In August we're returning to St. Croix and The Buccaneer. Our last visit was two years ago and I'm looking for some suggestions on restaurants.

Our favorites from previous visits, in no particular order:

- Duggans Reef
- Tutto Bene
- Indies
- Cheesbugers in Paradise
- Stixx
- Ft. Christian Brew Pub
- Rumrunners

Thanks in advance.

Duggans is still great! Tutto Bene has moved just east of Christiansted on Hospital Street due to landlord problems at their previous location. Indies has closed and, as of two months ago, nothing had moved into that space. Cheeseburgers, the Brew Pub and Rumrunners (best happy hour in downtown C'sted!) are all still open. Stixx is only open for dinner, but their wait staff is young, loud and surly - it used to be my "office" but I won't go there now.

Other places you might want to try are Bacchus, Kendrick's and Savant in Christiansted, the new H20 at the Hibiscus Beach Club, and Blue Moon in Frederiksted. All are relatively upscale. I love the Cane Bay Beach Bar on Sunday's for a la carte brunch, Off the Wall has great beach food. For local food try Kim's or Harvey's (lunch only) in C'sted and/or Nolan's Tavern east of C'sted on Hospital Street. For lunch Cafe Christine is wonderful, and for an extremely tasty and inexpensive lunch or dinner try Luncheria - both are in the Apothecary Courtyard in C'sted. Finally, my everyday favorite, the Bombay Club offers really good food at prices for every wallet and a range of menu from good burgers to superb filets and fish. For a light lunch try Cafe Misto in Christiansted - it offers creative take-out or eat in. And for breakfast or a sandwich you can't beat Shenanigan's in the Pan Am Arcade - rock bottom prices, squeaky clean and very friendly. On Thursdays she cooks a real Thanksgiving style meal for an equally ricidulous low price and on Saturday mornings she offers a special brunch menu of interesting items. Finally, some manner of restaurant was going into the location of the old Chart House in the King Christian Hotel. I think it was supposed to be open by now, but given both it's condition when we helped ourselves to a tour and "island time" I'd be real surprised if it operational yet.

Please post about your trip when you return!!

All of the above are good. Can't say I much care for the Bombay Club though.

For a fine dinning experience with impeccable service try Kendrick's on Company St in Christiansted.

Is the H20 at the Hibiscus a dressy or fancy restaurant or more like a casual place to eat on the beach?

It is not an informal beach place.

It has a hot reputation currently, but It would not be on my list of the five best on St Croix.

The view isn't even that good.

For the same money and better views try the Terrace at The Bucaneer, Duggan's Reef or the restaurant at the Villa Madeline.

Couldn't agree more, Jim. We ate at H20 in March and were underwhelmed, even though everyone was talking about it.

I'd throw in Cultured Pelican for food, service and views.

Agree that Kendrick's is "fine" dining.

We just got back on Saturday from St. Croix and ate at several of the restaurants mentioned in previous posts. IMHO Rumrunners is good, Tutu Bene is very good, Duggans is very good, H2O is good, Bacchus is excellent (We went on Wednesday when the 2nd bottle of wine is free, so my judgement might be a bit clouded), and drinks and appetizers in the lounge at the Bucanneer were very good with a fantastic view. The restaurant at Villa Madeleine closed permanently.

Do you guys know if Junie's, on STX, is still around and running her place? She used to have a small place on the south side and a lot of HOVIC/HOVENSA workers used to stop off at her place for a quick bit. She made killer stew....

Villa Madeline is closed for the off season. We ate there the last week they were open in early May. I hope they are not closed permanently! The food is great there.

Duggans was our least favorite restaurant and we ate there twice in our 3 week stay. It was good but not great in my opinion. It might have just been our menu choices.

I would add The Case Place at Gallows Bay for their crab dip and great ribs.

We ate at H2O during the day once and it was OK. It may be a more happening place at night.

Hello SGT,

Sorry I don't know either... is it a food van or a restaurant?

I am pretty sure that the Restaurant at Villa Madeleine is closed permanently. I talked to several people at the condos there last week who said that the building had been sold and was being converted to a private home. There was a dumpster next to the building and remodeling had started.

We're leaving on July 1st. for St. Croix, I was wanting to hear alittle more about Tutu Bene. Can you give me an idea of the dress code and the menu?
Any adivce will be appreciated. We love a good steak and good seafood.

What a shame if it is closing. I'm glad we got a chance to eat there. It will make a fantastic private home for sure. The view is really great.

Darrel,

We really enjoyed the steak at the Terrace Restaurant at the Buccaneer. Ask for a table by the outside wall area--- fantastic view of Christiansted and all that part of the island. We walked around up there during the day and knew we had to come back at night to see that view under the stars! Bill Bass was entertaining with his steel pans on Sunday nights this last spring and with the view, the music, 1 or 2 Rum Punches... it was heaven!

Tutto Bene doesn't look like that much from the outside, but is very nice on the inside--- upscale really the way it was decorated and the menu choices, very impressive. The night we were there people were dressed "casual dressy" or just casual. Pretty much like everywhere else on the island we ate at.

I'm already mourning the closing of Villa Madeline!! It was one of the more elegant places we found to eat on the island--- and that view! Lucky people who get to live there!

Tutto Bene has a website - http://www.tuttobenerestaurant.com/ - that includes the menu and photos. That will give you an excellent idea of what is served and what to wear. It is relatively upscale and, as Paula said, dressy casual is more the norm, but clean casual is fine. The service and staff are great there - I wish they were still in town so that I could get there more often.

It's funny how different people can get different perceptions, possibly due to off nights or different chefs. I like the folks at Rumrunners, their happy hour is great, the location is wonderful, but I've always been underwhelmed by the food, expecially for the price. You can check it out on-line at http://www.rumrunnersstcroix.com/ . I've eaten at Bombay well over two dozen times and only had two mediocre meals, while I was so disappointed in The Case Place (food tasted synthetic and waaay too salty) that I've never been back although the service was good. I wish my sister (my travel companion) were a more adventuresome diner, as I loved Kendrick's ( http://www.gotostcroix.com/kendricks/) and would love to try Savant and Bacchus ( http://www.restaurantbacchus.com/).

For a relatively complete and unbiased restaurant list that is updated frequently go to http://www.stcroixscuba.com/restaurants.htm. I have always found his "reviews" to be pretty accurate.
