Has anybody stayed at Hotel On The Cay? Any insights and/or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

My adult kids stayed there last summer. We had gotten a agreat deal through cheapcarribean.com and it was included for not much more than the price of the airfare alone. It is an older buiilding but had pretty nuch all you could want and the setting is gorgeous. They have a weekly show, dinner thing that was alot of fun, was on a tue. night I believe but the girls at the front desk are very helpful and can tell you all kinds of stuff to do.
you'll enjoy it.

Thanks, Sidnie! I thought I was going have to stay there and report on as a lone stayer on the Cay! I can't imagine it being too bad, givin the location and all. And the price is certainly right.

Thanks again, and I will write a report when we return.

Actually, there's quite a bit on HOTC available the search function under Forum Tools - just type in "Hotel on the Cay" and set for "all dates" I especially like the review at https://www.vinow.com/wwwtalk/read.php?4,21990,21990#msg-21990 because I know this person and she is very detail oriented (a good think IMO).

Glad to help - I had to hunt for the search function myself the first time, and clearly yesterday was not my best typing day!

I don't want to sound negative, but !! On one or our trips,my oldest son came down to meet us. He and his honey stayed at THOTC. I have to say that this was probaly about 5 years ago but the place was a mess. His room was in need of some serious TL&C. The one dresser had a broken leg and was kind of leaning over, the drawers were falling apart and the bathroom was pretty shabby. The place looks wonderful from a distance but once we got on the little island itself, it was pretty bad. Maybe they have made some improvements. If you do not plan to spend a lot of time in the room, I guess it would be O.K. The beach is nice enough and the restaurant is kind of typical of beach bars that I've been to. It is easy to get back and forth via the litle shuttle boat during the day. You should check out the time that it stops running at night. If you have a car, you have to figure where you'll be able to park it. I think a rental car is a must for visiting St. Croix. Cabs get pretty expensive and with a car you can do whatever you want whenever you want. It's an easy island to get around and there is a lot to see. It doesn't take long to get used to driving on the left. The one thing that I have problems with is stepping off a curb and crossing a street. You have to look in the opposite direction of which you are used to doing at home. I've almost been run over about 10 times. It is a great island and I'm sure you'll have a terrific time.

CariBert,
My wife & I have a time share at Hotel on the Cay & we can't wait to get back to STX any chance we get. HOTC isn't real fancy, but neither is STX & that is why we love it there. It's laid back & what an island vacation should be for us. If a person is looking for the Hilton or something like that they won't like HOTC or STX. But if you want to stay someplace where the front desk folks and the captain of the ferry learn your name in the 1st or second meeting & go out of their way to say good morning, then you will like HOTC & STX. A person can always find a down side to something, but we sure find a whole lot more of the positive to make us want to return as often as we can.
Enjoy!!!

Thanks for the info Bu-Bah.No, we are not looking for the Hilton, just mainly a base of operation. If it's clean, has friendly service, and cold beer (or Bushwhackers) we will be happy.

By the way, which unit is your time share? Should we be asking for that one? Or are you going to be there over the 4th of July?

Thank you for your input too, Stcroixboix. It sounds like they have done a bit of a make over in the five years or so since you have been there. We go for some major vegging out. We are very undemanding, just like to relax and have fun! Enjoy the Caribbean and an adult beverage or two.

It sounds like we are going to really enjoy the HOTC! Thanks again evryone who has responded!

Hi,

I too am an owner at HotC, two weeks from mid to late March. Wife and I aren't fancy and like to be in beach clothes from dawn till desk. We love HotC. Love the little island and feel very warm, smug, and secure. We think it's one of the best kept secrets in the Caribbean.

Having said that, it's not fancy and there are occasional maint. isues, but always resolved and never a problem...unless you are expecting the Ritz. Wife is a farm girl and I'm 34 yrs military so not always accustomed to the best. But I know location when I see it and this place is way cool... as my boys and their wives said last year.

Car parking can be a problem...though we know folks that rent a car and have no problems. We never rent a car and if we need to travel about, we take a taxi (van) to do our thing. I can give you a number of a very honest 60 yr old taxi driver (looks like he's 45)

Great eating on or near the boardwalk on St Croix, no need for car on that matter. Rooms at HotC have little fridge and micro. Wife and I do about a 6 block walk twice a week to Schooner's Bay marketg and another little market just a few hundred yards north of there to pick up eggs, veggies, etc. to make omelettes, sandwiches, etc in the room. Tues. night BBQ on the island (Protestant Cay (HotC) is fun. Little pricy but lots to eat. Feel free to email me if any questions. This was our third year at HotC.

Any questions on the island...ask Joanne...who has responded to your post. She's about a 19 time visitor to the island. I still don't know why she is called a Blister Sister.

I can't remember the number of our time share. But I would suggest that you ask to be in one of the newly redone units. They are a little nicer. We have our time the 1st week of Nov & we really like that time. Less people, no waits for dinner, although we've been down in March for St Patty's day (which is a blast) and didn't have to wait long for food or a cold one.
If you do rent a car, talk to Peter if he is still there, he's very helpful. But there is good parking about 2 or 3 blocks from the boardwalk, next to the school systems building, just past the Park Service. It has lighting and a night watchman.
Make sure you check out the crab races monday night at the Brew Pub and also the beer drinking pigs at the Domino Club. My wife still breaks out laughing each time I mention the pigs!
