We're going to St Croix Aug. 12-19. Can't wait!!

Anyway this may be a silly question but is it safe to drink the tap water in STX? Locals, do you drink from your tap?

We're planning on buying bottle water to drink while out and about but weren't sure about the water in hotel faucets, etc.

Any advice or links to the USVI drinking water quality would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check with your hotel. They will be happy to tell you whether or not thier H2O is good to drink or not. Same with restaurants.

we did drink the water from the faucets but it didn't taste so great. At the Schooner Market there was a place to refill your gallon water jugs for $0.50. We refilled 1-2 every day and it was worth it. Have fun on your trip.

When I've been there, I used the bottled water to drink. I rinsed and spit with faucet water. Bottled water is nice to freeze and take with you to the beach or hiking. Most places have a small dorm size fridge/freezer to use.

I believe the hotels and restaurants have to test water once a month. If the water in not fit for drinking, the owner has to post this in the rooms and fix problem.

We are here at Hotel on The Cay, right now, and the water tastes fine from the faucet.. As good as in Dallas. We are on our way to eat dinner at Rum Runners, and the water and drinks tastte great! It is hot here now, but way better than being at home!

Trip report to follow....

CariBert: I am amazed anyone would actually DRINK the water in Dallas. Especially in the late summer when it gets that really, really funky taste!! 😉

We drink Hotel on the Cay water all the time. Wife often melts the ice machine water for drinking...thinks it has one more filter. One day on the water taxi, the hotel manager and the water sampling girl were on the same boat. The manager said..."see, we test the water monthly"! Do you know where your bottled water comes from and did you know that most major cities have as good as or in many cases better water than bottled water?

Yes, I know my city (Austin, TX) has great water right from the tap and that's what I drink everyday. I actually prefer tap water to bottled water because I think bottled water tastes funny.

I've drank tap water in travels across North America and Europe but I just wasn't sure about tap water on an island. I'm also not jazzed about paying probably $2 a bottle for water while in STX but we'll see what happens when we get there.

Thanks again for all your replies.

We're back. UGH. Not good....back to work.....bummer. But had a great time on St. Croix........drank the water every day, but there must be something they put in it because i know I've gained at least 7 pounds! It had nothing to do with the great meals we enjoyed at Rum Runners, or the Brew Pub, or any of the other wonderful places we dined. It must have been something in the water!

Speaking of in the water, Buck Island is still awesome! Went twice with Big beard. The second time is half price, good deal. The weather cooperated very well, it rained two or three times, but late at night so all was well. The Hurons and doves and pelicans are everywhere on the Cay! They have taken the place of any and all roosters to get you up in the morning! We stayed in room HM5, so Sandcrab you will know where I'm talking about. We sat on the terrace every evening enjoying the cool breeze and enjoyed a scotch and a book until we were ready to nod off. Matt, the assistant manager took good care of us, and put up with our idiosyncrecies as we tried out 6 rooms, and settled on the HM5.

I am working on a trip report, so that will be forth coming, and I have a ton of pix to put on the web and will have that info too.

Bottom line: drink the water, it's O.K.

I've been here over a year now and buy water to drink. It is relatively cheap when you buy the gallon or 5 gal. The first gallon might cost $1.25, but you take that to the Water Maker stations located at Schooner Bay and most grocery stores - either inside or out - and pay 50cents a gallon. For that matter - buy one or 2 small bottles, then refill them from the 50 cent gallons. Makes sense to me.

I have city water not cistern and I still won't drink the water. Not that I don't trust WAPA, but....

Good luck - look some of us up when you're here. You can always find one of us Linda's at the Buccaneer.
