We're arriving on Saturday and renting a 4WD vehicle. We hope to get to the isolated beaches of Jacks and Isaacs Bays, and I understand that we can drive out to Point Udall and hike down by the Millenium Monument. Is this true? Also, is this an easy walk, and how long is it? Safety issues?

I also hear that Sandy Point may not be so safe. Should we be concerned at all, beyond the usual precautions (leave valuables home, not at night)? There will be two of us.

Any other offbeat tips about St. Croix, where to drive with a Jeep perhaps?

Thanks
-eric

Sandy point is fine on weekends (closed rest of time). It is on one of the worst roads I've ever seen, but you should be ok in 4WD. My suggestion? Drive down, and take a look around. On weekends you should see other people/families on the beach. And of course, take all the normal safety precautions.

Once you get there, if you don't feel comfortable, don't stay. But I think it will be fine.

You don't have to hike to the monument at point udall. You can drive right up to it. From there you can see a small hiking trail that leads down to the beach. It's a pretty fun walk, but the beach it leads to is rocky and not that great for swimming. There are better beaches just to east.

If you like to hike I recommend taking one of the eco tours that goes through the rain forrest. I'll try to find the info on that for you.

Jeeps can be targets for thievery because, no doors, no locks, so buy a good back pack and keep your stuff in there and with you. Carry a SMALL roll of cash in your front pocket. Maybe 20 ones. It's great for handing out tips and if god forbid you were messed with, you throw that money over their head yell "That's all I got!" and run like hell.

I've lived here about a year and a half and never been robbed, or mugged, but I do hear stories. I wouldn't let it worry you too much, but an "ounce of prevention" as they say.

Have Fun!
J.

With Jeeps with canvas tops and other cars for that matter you need to be smart when parking in deserted areas.

Take you valuables and leave the windows open. Why tempt someone to slice your top or break a window just to check out if you left your wallet in the glove compartment or a camera under the seat.

People breaking into cars in desolate areas is a problem not just in the VI.

Hey I appreciate the answers. I just found this message board a few days ago, and I've scanned it thoroughly for island info. My partner is a bit concerned that St. Croix won't be exotic enough (we did two amazing trips to Mexico) but I do believe I've done my homework, and I think we're going have a great time. I've never shelled out the extra bucks for a 4WD, but I think this time it'll be worth it. We'll be on the west coast at Sand Castle on the Beach, and I think we can find enough secluded areas to check out, on either coast.

Thanks again
Eric

Sandcastles is a nice place on a beautiful beach. You'll have a great time. with a 4WD you can take the scenic route through the rain forest. Someone at your hotel will be able to direct you.

One of your first stops should be at the National Park Information Center/Gift Shop in Christiansted. It's in the old Scale House. The lady there has a GREAT driving map of St. Criox and can also answer all types of questions.

Have fun.
