Hi, y'all.
Wife and I are headed down to STX from chilly NJ in less than 2 weeks, staying at a friend's condo. We'll be renting a car and spending most of our time touring the island and hitting the beaches. But we love to ride horses when we go on vacation, so am hoping someone could recommend a stable we can check out. Also, any good snorkling outfitters you'd recommend?

Thanks,
Rap

hey Rap

For horses, call either Paul & Jill's Stables at 340.772.2880 or 772.2627 — they are in the West End near Sprat Hall, they do rainforest and beach rides.

Or call Equus Rides: 340.778.0933. They're located at Cane Bay (mid north shore)

For snorkeling: do a half or full day excursion to Buck Island with either Big Beard's Adventure Tours: 773-4482 or Caribbean Sea Adventures 340-773-2628. Both are located in Christiansted. There are also smaller outfitters, geared more towards Scuba Divers, that rent snorkel gear. Here are a couple on the West End: Scuba Shack 772-DIVE, Scuba West 772.3701

Enjoy!

Here are the websites for the two horseback riding outfits:

And here are some web sites for snorkeling at Buck Island:

There is also excellent snorkeling at Cane Bay and at the beaches on the west end (in Frederiksted).

If this is your first trip you might want to consider taking a Safari Tour with Sweeny http://www.gotostcroix.com/safaritours/ to get a feel for the island and it's history, and to decide where you would want to return to explore more. He is extremely knowledgeable and is a very nice man. Everyone that I have ever referred to him has been delighted.

Hello Raprider... I have a suspicion that you might be Stacey's friend who is coming down to borrow her new condo before she ever gets to see it! I look forward to meeting you. Hopefully the condo sale will be closed in time for your visit.

Definitely call Steven at Equus for a ride along St. Croix's north shore. He's an interesting character (ex-priest from Ireland who has settled into St. Croix after running horseback riding operations in both Hawaii and Australia).

You can also snorkel from the beach at Cane Bay on the north shore. This is a popular SCUBA location, but there are sections of the reef in water shallow enough for snorkeling. It's a great beach day, also, and there is a handy beach bar for food, drinks, and bathroom. Rental gear is available at the dive shop if you don't have your own equipment.

Other beaches to check out include:
Rainbow Beach on the west end north of Frederiksted (you can walk a mile in either direction to Changes in l'Attitude and Sunset Grill), Sandy Point at the southwest tip of the island, Buccaneer Beach & Carambola Beach on the hotel properties, Shoys Beach, ha'Penny Beach, Grapetree (south shore-east end), parts of Great Pond and the Divi Resort have good sandy beaches, or if you want to hike down a hillside there are some remote clothing optional beaches in the Isaac's Bay/Jack's Bay area at the southeast tip of the island that you can access from the road to Point Udall. There are other beaches, also, but these are a few to give you ideas. Check out the St. Croix map at: http://www.virgin-islands-on-line.com/sc/scmap.shtml to get a visual for where some of these are located.
