Hi All,

Happy New Year.! We are coming to St John in April to get married with about 20 of our closest friends and family. It's starting to feel "real"! My Fiance and I fell in love with ( and maybe on) St John early in our relationship and are excited to share the island experience and our wedding with our children and friends!! We've decided to rent a car on STT and bring it over to SJ. Iv'e read the posts, and understand the risks, but we're going to go for it. I'm confused though about taking the car ferry. Can we only take the car ferry from Amalie, or can we take one from Red Hook as well? We will have to pick our car ( at the airport), our marriage licence.......... and we may food shop on STT. ( will it save us some $$ that we can put to good use at some of our favorite ST spots?) Although we know our way around ST, we don't know STT that well and won't have GPS or mapquest to help. Which ferry dock would be our best bet ( assuming they both take cars) Any ideas, maps, main road we should stay on, etc??

On another note, it looks as though beach parties are back on Sunday afternoons at Sapphire, is that right??

I CAN"T WAIT!!! Any input is appreciated........

There are two car ferries at Red Hook, one departs on the hour, the other, the halfhour. I've taken both this week for a day's motorcycling on St. John. It's about a 25 minute crossing, they charged $20 R/T for the motorcycle, don't know what they charge for a car. There is a "Food Mart" just about 1/2 mile from Red Hook, they have reasonable prices and good food selections, really good wine selections. Hope this helps.

There is no car barge from CA so you'll be driving to Red Hook and, depending on which route you take, you'll have seveal options for shopping on the way. If you take the route which runs up Raphune Hill to Weymouth Rhymer Highway, then to Tutu, Smith Bay and Red Hook, you'lll go by the warehouse store CostULess. Then in the Tutu Park Mall there is KMart and Plaza Xtra. The South side side route through Bolongo will take you by Food Center and then directly across from the ferry terminal is the smaller Marina Market. If you go to "ferry schedule" at the top of this page you'll find information on the car barge schedules and prices. The rental car company will give you a map and getting around is pretty easy.

Yes, the Sapphire Beach Sunday party is apparently back but I've personally not heard too much about it. Have a wonderful time. Cheers!

A couple of things. Do not assume that you can land and the get the marrage lisence on the same day. Call and check the hours. Things are a little different down here than the main land.

The advice that was give earlier to shop in ST for food is a good idea. You will save a few $$ by doing that. Cost you less, K Mart and Plaza Extra will be cheaper than Food center in Bavoni.

Check the rental agency to see if you cam bring the car of STJ. Some will tell you no.

The beach party is on again at Sapphire. We have some condos there and the party goes on about 2-3. Lasts until 6-7.
Sapphire Resort is still a legal battle. It will go on and on and only the lawyers make some money.

Have a happy!!

Thanks everyone.....I did my homework with regards to hours for the courthouse, permission to bring car to STJ, etc. Hopefully all will go smoothly, but if not, it will create a story to tell............CAN"T WAIT to leave snowy New England and put my feet in the carribean water!!

I would take what they said about the court with a grain of salt as I know the marriage license division will be there when you say you will be if prearranged, even Saturday and Sunday!!

PS AVIS has a GPS available to rent at the airport
