Hello all!

Has anyone taken the ferry from STT to Tortola? I looked at the ferry schedule and it states $40 round trip. Does the boat itself go through Customs or do you go through Customs when you get to the island? If you go through on the island, is there a charge to pay?

Thanks!

Hello Taghan,

Haven't taken the Tortola ferry in a while so I called to get the information. Only got through to the Fast Ferry and they said passengers go through customs on island and there is a $5 departure fee to pay when you leave Tortola to return to the USVI.

Is this different than the ferry to Jost where you told me that the $45 includes the $20 customs fee?

Hello Dale,

The Tortola Fast Ferry person didn't mention any additional fees except the $5 departure fee. And said their $40 roundtrip fee is just for the passage.

I got through to Smith's Tortola ferry and the gal there said the same; $5 departure fee paid to the government when leaving Tortola and thats it.

The Jost ferry person had said $20 customs fee was included in their $45 roundtrip fee the other day when I called for you. I just called back right now and reworded my question to "Is there a fee to pay?" and they said you will pay $5 departure fee on St. John. I said any customs fee and they said "no customs fee, everything else is included in the ticket, just $5 extra for departure fee".

I find getting information from the BVI ferry operators extremely difficult. I don't know if its me 🙁 but it seems like if I ask the same question 5 different ways I'll get 5 different answers.

Also of interest...the ferry dock (Customs dock) at West End, Tortola is going to be closed "for several weeks" for repairs, starting today 2/6/05, according to a report in th Virgin Islands Daily News yesterday. All ferry traffic will be routed through Road Town. The dock will be open for small pleasure craft and the Jost Van Dyke ferry only.
