Hi, I know this might be considered a "Florida" question to some, but it is more of a VI question to me as I am sure others have done this before or at least thought of it before 🙂
Here's the deal: The wife and I have a 12 day flight already booked going into FLL. Neither of us have ever been to the VI, and really want to check it out and I am 100% doing it and researching all flights already and just about have it planned out and ready to pull the trigger on booking the flights. Basically 2 or 3 nights in St. Thomas and 3 nights on St. Croix. We WILL be taking the Sea Plane.
That being said, she does pack a LOT! I guess I do a little bit too, lol. That being said and considering we are going to be on the Sea Plane and plus going on 2 different islands, does anyone know of a place in Miami or Lauderdale where we can safely store like half of our luggage??? A hotel came to mind first, but the problem is we will probably be about 2 days in Lauderdale and about 3 days in Miami with doing the VI trip inbetween so there is a good chance we will not be coming back to the same hotel on return to Florida. Hope this made sense! In short, coming to Florida from the midwest with lots of luggage and taking a little 5 or 6 day break to the VI in the middle of the trip but would like to SAFELY store half our luggage somewhere in Florida (between FLL and MIA) so we don't have to worry about hauling it around everywhere on the Virgin Islands while island hoping. On a side note, extra money charges on the Sea Plane are just a minor issue, so not that important, but the main thing is just not having to haul it around! 🙂
Any tips would be helpful! THANKS! 😎
I don't mean to be facetious but you do realize that the US Virgin Islands are a long way from FLA and that St Croix is quite a distance from St Thomas? If I were you I would either fly directly to St Croix and spend your 5/6 nights there or fly to St Thomas and spend the time there. Although St Thomas is very close to St John and the British Virgin Islands for day trips, St Croix is out there on its own. With all the traveling involved I just don't see that you'll really have much time to relax and enjoy before you're packing to leave again. Can't help you with the luggage storage dilemma. Sorry!
I have to agree with STT. The VI is not a jaunt from FL.
I am not aware of any seaplane that flies from FL to the VI. There is one that flies between STT and STX, but you will be flying commercial from FL to the VI so you wont have any luggage issues there. It would just be between the islands.
Um, can do without all the "if I were you", no offense............. I'm limited on days (2 weeks), have lots of people to visit in FLL and MIA, but want to visit the VI. I thought the VI people were "friendly"???? Sorry it is so offensive down there with lots of suggestions without reading a detailed question........ guess we will just go to Key West because we love it there and EVERYONE is friendly and have other friends there!
Again, to get to my point, IT WAS STORING LUGGAGE IN FLORIDA! DO NOT TRY TO DICTATE MY TRIP! MY TRIP IS PLANNED AND WE HAVE PLENTY OF TIME AND MONEY!!! DO YOU THINK MY I.Q. IS BELOW 56 ASKING IF I KNOW HOW FAR THE VI IS FROM FLA??? DUH??? DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I WENT FROM THE MIDEWEST TO HAWAII????
I wrote the question for an ANSWER, and I made it detailed to be sure there would be a GOOD answer. Not someone, whoever you are, asking an American if I know how far the trip is from Miami to STT or STX.
Sorry for the rant, but some of you "experts" need to chill out and stop making HIGH LEVEL BIZ EXECS THAT TRAVEL ALL THE TIME look like Dbags............. in short, your answer was a "know it all answer", BUT YOU DID NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION SO YOU DO NOT KNOW!
I thought only travel forums from NY answered questions like this..... I guess the VI is getting a lot of New Yorkers moving in............ so I am MOVING ON! KEY WEST FOR ME INSTEAD OF THE VI!
THANKS FOR THE GREAT KNOW IT ALL RESPONSES! *-)
and i never said a sea plane from Florida to the VI............. if i worded it incorrectly I meant from STT TO STX! I guess I spent too much time trying to word this correctly and it did not come out right, sorry. But either way, the responses I got did NOT EVEN COME CLOSE TO ANSWER MY QUESTION AND JUST GAVE STOOPID ADVICE ON TRAVELING. So sorry, I thought it was people with knowledge, probably 16 year old forum hackers.
We will just pack less and find a locker in MIA. Problem solved. It will be a fun trip, ignore this question and be happy in the winter 🙂
This is a USVII travel forum. It is frequented by both people that live in the territory and those that visit often. This is not a travel board about FL or traveling through FL or even a board about people that travel from FL.
You said you will be taking the seaplane and were worried about luggage. I would say that we field many questions from people that think that STT is just a boat ride from FL or the Bahamas for that matter. It is not uncommon for people to be misinformed about geography. Based on the way your post was worded, it seemed that you were taking a seaplane from FL, hence the response you received.
I know nothing about you, nor do I care to know your I.Q. or how often you travel to Hawaii or how much money you have, those comments are just silly.
"Not someone, whoever you are, asking an American if I know how far the trip is from Miami to STT or STX" An American? I am an American, why would you assume that I wasn't? And why does it matter what anyone's nationality is? Do Americans have a better handle on geography than other nationalities?
I hope you enjoy your vacation, whatever your destination, it seems like you need it.
Wow. He really does need a vacation. Hope we don't freak him out when he gets to STT/STX.
OP, your vitriolic responses were quite a hoot to read. It's been 50 years since I was 16 years old and neither forums or hackers were around back in those days. 😀 I'm not going to answer your ridiculous and totally uncalled for tirades but, since you were so affronted that a poster could possibly misinterpret your question about the seaplane, I'd like to point out confusion in your posts.
At 9:32 last night you said, "KEY WEST FOR ME INSTEAD OF THE VI!" and just four minutes later in another post you said, "We will just pack less and find a locker in MIA. Problem solved."
Enjoy your vacation wherever you spend it as you very obviously are in much need of much relaxation. If your plans do include the VI I still recommend that you pick either St Thomas or St Croix and not split the difference for such a short trip. Then again you are way more of a seasoned traveler than I and need no suggestions from a 30 year resident. Have fun.
PS: If you are traveling with your wife or a significant other of any kind, please extend my sympathies to them.
PPS: Viz your comment that probably several people had had the same plan as you and asked a similar question, I've been assisting visitors to the VI on several forums over many years and have not once seen even a remotely similar question posed.
I would contact the hotel in MIA , explain your situation and see if they could hold your luggage there and the bags would be 'in position' when you got back - or perhaps one of your MIA friends could hold part of them. The hotel in MIA should have a concierge or sales director who could facilitate this for you, especially if you are a member of one the chains loyalty programs. We send display cases ahead all the time and have them held for our arrival.
STT Resident..... I always enjoy reading your posts! This guy clearly needs a vacation, lots of rum (assuming it doesn't make him violent), and a break away from his clearly miserable life. He has sooo much money and such a high IQ, I don't see why he even needs to bother asking questions. Silly us for attempting to give him advice. Isn't that what this board is for? I have a great deal of sympathy for his wife too .... unless she is just as "rich" "smart" and arrogant as him. I hope they don't come to the VI, because they will probably be something that dangles between a males legs - if you get my drift?
Obviously he hasn't looked at the forum much, seen how many uniformed "hop over to St. Croix" questions there are or seen STT's numerous postings and gleaned that she does indeed know everything. Wherever he goes I'm sure nothing will satisfy so let's hope he lands elsewhere.

Yes, this place is for HIGH I.Q. advice...... um, people not being able to understand a question. Nice advice, go back and re-read and re-read again the advice given. EXCELLENT ADVICE and it was "really" DIRECTLY related to the question I was asking. Again, just look at my question and then the first two responses. They make no sense whatsoever to what I asked, but again, this is a fast paced world now and PEOPLE RESPONDING only read about 2 words from the original poster and think they will have the correct response. Those people need a vacation! No worries, I will figure it out, and I switched the flights up so the first destination is St. Croix and I will IMMEDIATELY visit the rum factory and get smashed, hee hee hee. Thanks!
So for the last time, Barkers, if you read my original post again and see the immediate 2 responses and think that is "advice"............. WOW! I will buy you a couple of rum bottles as well and we can get SMASHED together! I will let you know when I arrive and will let you know when I'm going to the rum factory! 🙂
Now let's discuss vacationing again please.............. and YES, SORRY FOR THE SPAZ OUT FROM MY END.

Good luck with that. I doubt there are many contributors to this forum who would welcome an opportunity to discuss your vacation after reading your relentless shouting attacks. But, just for the sake of good order and in light of your insistence that a respondent's IQ is a material factor on this forum, what's the lowest number you'd accept as meriting your attention? I was tested at 135 but that was 20 years ago and I've obviously slipped hugely since then judging from my complete inability to comprehend your question. Would it help the weeding out process if, before responding, a poster first notes his or her IQ followed by year tested, i.e. "120, 2008"? As much as you've hardly elicited a warm and fuzzy response from anyone on here so far, one would nonetheless hate to have you suffer a major apoplectic stroke before you have a chance to enjoy your vacation.
Love you, you old tart 🙂

I certainly did not feel qualified to give a "HIGH level biz exec" advice - don't they have mid and lower level people to do that for them?
just4steven.
Your orginal question is legit. I often fly from the west coast, stopping (on one or both legs) in either Miami or NYC for business, then on to the VI..so I understand the predicament. This what I found helpful...
Pack two sets of bags.
1) Mail ahead two+ boxes to St Thomas. (US POST OFFICE, flat rate priority @ $12) Make sure the Hotel looks out for your boxes. note: Style in the islands is very casual, you won't need much. USPO is the most effective shipping method to the USVI.
2) Check one+ bag to FLA. Before leaving for USVI, USP the bag to your next FLA destination. Bring tape, labels from home. note: Style in Fla is more "classy". UPS is reiable carrier in FLA.
3) Carry on a bag with all your essentials.
Even though you didn't ask....Seaborne from STT to STX is great idea. We often pop over to STX for a few days. Completely doable, and the Seaplane is great adventure!!
I enjoy trips that are packed with fun. Good luck.
8-)Wow...what a thread.
Let me remind you just4steven. The VI's are a laid back place and if you REALLY FEEL THE NEED TO GO THERE, you better get the rum in you BEFORE you get there.
