I came across this on a BVI forum and thought I might share it here since so many of us make daytrips to Jost as part of our USVI vacation experience.

There's a proposal to build a dock at White Bay 🙁

While we, as visitors, don't really have a say in what is best for Jost, we can make our opinions known so that the beautiful and welcoming people on Jost can make a decision based on many factors, including the expected reaction of visitors.

If you would like to have your opinion considered, please click this link to sign the online petition to stop the dock at White Bay.

LLBL, glad we're going to get there this month! Looks like White Bay may soon be forever changed. 🙁

Thanks Bluwater. I just sigend the petition. We honeymooned at Sandcastle 19 years ago and we had the entire beach to ourselves. It has already changed dramatically over the years. The only bar was the Soggy Dollar and we the only patrons in August. We still like to visit but we hate when its crowded.

thanks Blu - I signed even tho I've only been there for one day, and may never get to go back again (but I hope that's not the case!) It is just about the most beautiful places I've been to. It would totally ruin it to put in a dock. Before you know it, cruise ships will be pulling in to White Bay! yuck!

btw - I'm now an official member of the soggy dollar Painkiller club - got my card in the mail the other day! It entitles me to lots of free things, such as - use of any unoccupied hammock!heehee. and the funniest one - exclusive access thru their VIP door! ha! what door?? cute card

my sig is from the hammock at Soggy dollar!

wow EE, I didn't know that. Surely they're not the large ones with 2000-3000 people on them! I suppose a small ship that is more like a yacht is what you mean?

Some of the Windjammer boats, the old Sea Goddess and the new generation of her ilk, the Club Med boat, the Wind Spirit. Smaller ships indeed, but still rather overwhelming to the infrastructure.

They are usually the small ones.

My favorite saying. Tourism, our best asset and our worst enemy. Unfortunately I doubt that any petitions will work as once they see opportunity to increase business, they will, even if those that like the way it is object.
I remember years ago when JVD got electricity, water, and Cable TV the same year and how it changed them. First thing Sydney told me was that he was going to build docks so the boats can pull in and hook up to his electricity and water. I tried to explain to him that this is not why the people come here. They come here for the simplicity and quietness. Oh well. Now it looks like White Bay will be next.

Ron,

From what I've read, it sounds like there's one very powerful person who is the proponenet of the dock. Someone from Tortola?

I have wondered how the beachfront establishments feel about this.

This petition is also making the rounds on myspace and www.sttbacchanal.com. One of myspace friends living in STT posted the bulletin yesterday with reference to the website to go to for signage. I signed today and was the 2202nd signature.

I am a former STT resident who grew up and lived most of my adult life there and value the lifestyle I was afforded living in the Virgin Islands. There are not many places left anymore that offer the quiet solitude and the unspoiled, gorgeous beach, sea and sand that White Bay has. I would like to think that one day when my grandkids are a little older I can show them Jost Van Dyke and have them see and enjoy it as I did.
