First-timer to St John come April 27th. Staying on the East end, at The Retreat. Any suggestions on a grocery store to stock the villa. Thanks.

I'd suggest Starfish Market in Cruz Bay. They have everything you'll need. It's on the South Shore Rd. in the Marketplace shopping complex.

KenT, one you get stocked up there are some good options in Coral Bay for followup. Lily's Market and Love City Mini Mart have the main staples. Lily's at Cocoloba and Love City is down King Hill Road a little bit from the gas station. If you follow King Hill Road a bit further you will come to Josephine's Farm. They do organic produce and a wide variety of herbs and spices. The best restaurant serve greens.

You'll love the East End. I'm sure you'll stop in at Sloop Jones and Vie's. The Retreat is very interesting. I hope you'll post a review!

Cheers, RickG

RickG, Thanks for the advice, it's nice to know that there are some choices closer to the East end. I'll definitely post upon our return.

Consider making a good list and purchase in the states and dedicate a suitcase for the staples! Food there is pricey!!!!

There's a couple of other ideas/options for you. http://www.grocerygoddesses.com/ are a couple of ladies on St. Thomas who take
VISA, MasterCard and American Express. Their web site says, "The Grocery Goddesses shopping fee is 18% of the total grocery bill, in addition to $25.00 for delivery/stocking. There is no minimum order, but please consider the provisioning fee in order to make our service economically feasible." I have a place on Water Island and we haven't quite figured out how to arrange for them and all the groceries to get transport to the vacation home because there's no taxis. So, I've not taken advantage of their service yet. But, I've heard great things about them and you can ask if there's additional cost for them to deliver to St. John.

Another idea/option is something that we (and others that post on this board) do whether we're on island for a week or months at a time. We shop Sam's Club/Costco/BJs for frozen giant bag of chicken breasts, burgers, steaks, shrimp, luncheon meats, etc.. The night before our flight we do a "trial run" and put them in the bag (soft sided cooler or hard side cooler that we put in a duffel bag) we're going to check them in to make sure we're within the weight restrictions. Put the stuff back in the freezer. The morning of our flight, we throw the frozen items into the bag and head to the airport. By the time we arrive on Water Island, everything is still frozen. We put the luncheon meats in the refrigerator and the rest in the freezer. We purchase our produce, dairy, etc. locally. Each morning while having our coffee on the porch, we talk about what we want for dinner and I take our selection out of the freezer. By dinnertime, grill is hot, meat is thawed, wine is cold - dinner is wonderful.
