I know the North Shore beach surf in Winter season is rougher compared to Summer but can you give me an idea as to when it tends to change? We have always visited in summer and enjoy the smooth North Shore conditions that time of year. With my wife retiring it opens up other times of the year to visit but we do not want to go when 'surf's up'.
Any assistance is appreciated
I have seen surf "up" (ie: winter swells) starting as early as November to March and occasionally the odd day in April (but very rare)

Oh, I forgot to add - it's also too cold for me to swim during those months as well 🙂

I have been going to STJ the first week of April for 7 years now. The North shore is generally calm and the water temp. is in the high 70's to low 80's.
Thanks very much for the information. You have been a great help
