Heading to STJ the last week of Feb. Wondering if anyone could give me any information on fishing. I am not necessarily looking to rent a charter boat. I would be more interested on renting some equipment or bringing my own and fishing from shore. I was wondering if anyone had any information for me as far as fishing licenses, renting equipment, locations to fish, species to target, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Tom

Fishing off the land usually means Yellow Tail or bottom feeders. No license needed! Don't believe you can rent gear, but can't say for absolute sure. All you would need is a hand line and some squid and you would be set. There is a shop in Red Hook before getting to STJ you could hit for your needs. I know nothing of STJ as for shops were you could purchase your needs, sorry. Just don't catch an eel! I almost did this in STT!!!!
Maybe someone who lives in STJ can give you an idea of where to fish!

I shore fish a lot on St. John. You can rent gear from Ocean Runner in Wharfside Village, 340.693.8809. I use either squid, which can be purchased frozen at all most all of the grocery stores, or hermit crabs, which the fish love! Try searching this forum for similar topic, I posted awhile back on this topic as did many others. Have fun!

Catch and release only within the national park waters. You can catch a wide variety of fish.... snapper, tarpon, cuda, snook, etc.

As mentioned above, hermit crabs are great! Or if you want artificials, little silver spoons and small broken back minnows are a few that work. Good luck!

It is Not catch and release in NP. You can catch and keep with a few restrictions. There are a few fish you cannot keep, but most you can. You also cannot fish in a marked swimming area. There are also some restrictions on other things like Whelks and Conch. You can only take them when they are in "season".

I guess I stand corrected.:$) Although tarpon and bonefish are catch and release only as per the regs on the site below.
