We are staying on St. John 12/18 - 12/24. Trying to decide if we should rent a 4WD vehicle at the airport in St. Thomas, and take it by ferry over to St. John or take a cab to the ferry and then rent once we get to St. John (there are 4 of us). Seem to recall when we were in St. Thomas about 9 years ago and rented a car, there was something about taking it to St. John--either you couldn't or there was an extra charge to do it. Since we are coming home on Christmas Eve, I'm wondering if we will run into delays taking the ferry back over--would things be slower on that day, or business as usual? Our flight leaves at 4pm, so we have plenty of time to get there if we leave mid morning. If we can rent in St. Thomas and take it over, I think it would be slightly less expensive when you factor the cost of the cabs to & from the airport (for 4 people), but am not sure if it would be more hassle? Thanks.

The more things change...the more they stay the same.

This debate will continue forever but here is a boiled down list. Others will chime in to provide details or corrections.

Pro
Less expensive
Get transportation sooner
More control on departure (see below)

Con
Support on STJ may be limited (flats, battery, etc.)
Local parking on renter site not available in Cruz Bay
Ferry access seems to be hit and miss of late so you need to allocate more time

Hope this helps

Hey! Well, got everything put together at the last minute. We'll be in STJ 10/17 - 10/24. I called Hertz- they said you can't takr their cars on the ferry. Any quick recommendations for either island? have to decide in next day or so. Thanks.

Hey tree,

We have a vehicle rented from Dependable Car Rental on St Thomas (they pick you up at the airport) for November and they do allow it to be taken to St. John. I have also heard many posters mention that there are a lot of great companies on St John to rent from so that may be an option for you.

We are probably going to rent from Thrifty in STT also.

We are staying in STJ but neither island seems too keen on wanting you to visit the other island. C&C does not let you go to STT with your car or any other island. Their rental rates are over $100 more!

We rented from Budget at the STT airport last time. No problem with taking the car to STJ. I also hear the car ferry service is sporadic. There must still be construction at Red Hook. We seem to like renting on STT and taking car to STJ since you dont have to worry about making it to the airport on time.
