Hi,

My boyfriend and I are considering on relocating to STT next year. The only think we are a little concerned about is our jobs.

My boyfriend owns a small contracting company here in New Jersey and we are looking to see what STT would have available for him to do.

Does anyone have suggestions on starting a small business on STT that would cater to repair or maintenance of homes, apartments, condos and preferably rental units?

Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Post this over on the Relocation Board and you will get more responses, I think. And research, research, research! Call every one of the other contractors in the phone book (www.viphonebook.com) and pick their brains, contact the DOL to see what the requirements are, check the Trader and Daily News for competitive ads. Make several PMV's. Possibly work for another contractor for a few months to get the 'feel' of the islands, as things work a little differently here, plus he'd have the benefit of picking his boss' brain on a daily basis. There are many contractors to choose from, some with great reputations ((www.allconstructionvi.com), and some...well, less than great. If you contact Andy at ALL Construction, you can use my name. I know he's looking for some help right now, so maybe your BF should contact him, get hired and come down for an extended PMV? Just a few thoughts, hope they help!

I plan on moving down there some day...i also live in jersey...my family owns a steakhouse up here and I’ve grown up in the business, but don’t want to do that down there..its hard enough up here...But i do know a lot about business/computers/online mkt and would like to apply all of that down there (still searching for that hook) ...i know that working for someone else is going to get me no where...I need to be on my own...I know they say moving to paradise isn’t for everyone, but i say moving to paradise is easy, being successful in paradise is hard...I need to figure out the secret formula…if you have any ideas let me know.
Thanks,
Scott

Scott: same advice applies - go to the relocation forum (see "Visit Relocation Message Board" top right this page) and read the information available there which is enormous. Before even posting, read the first post by board moderator Islander which says something along the lines of "New to this board - read this first" and then go from there to explore. There is no magic wand or secret formula or "hook" to make anyone's move here any less difficult than moving to any new place. The attrition rate for newbies is huge because the concept of living in "Paradise" is a fantasy. Happy researching and cheers!
