We will be in St. Thomas during the week after Easter 2005. We look to stay in low rises or condos on a beautiful beach. Also like to have a kitchenette. Best Western Emerald Beach Resort, Bolongo Bay, and Elysian Beach Resort have been recommended. Seeking opinions from people in the know.
Thanks and Best Regards,
Debi

Debi:

We stayed at the Point Pleasant Resort. (Nicely appointed condos-full kitchens, living rooms, bedroom(s) & most importantly a wrap around balcony).
The units have an incredible "down island" view (St. John, Tortola, Yost Van Dyke and several other smaller islands). Ask for the upper level condos - top unit). We stayed in D-23.
Also....Great restaurants, Agave & Fungi's.
2 Beaches: Pineapple beach & Sugar beach.
Close to Red Hook.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. Am looking at a photograph of the Point Pleasant Resort. They don't appear to be on the beach. How far are the beaches from the Resort?

Regards.

Debi:

The Point Pleasant Resort is beach front property. If you take a lower level condo unit you'll hear the sound of the waves....however the view is better from the top of the hill (and more "romantic" - imho). They provide shuttle service (free) to the beach level. The Agave Restaurant is mid level, but what a view.

View their on-line brochure.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tip. We are narrowing the search between Secret Harbour and Point Pleasant Resorts. They are on opposite sides of the island. Do you have a preferance?
Thanks again

debi:

Both properties are on the East End (about 10-12 minutes apart).
My wife & I visited 7 properties in STT (all on the East End, including both Secret Harbour & Point Pleasant). We liked Point Pleasant so much that we just bought a unit there. Our preference.........obviously.....Point Pleasant.

The view & the "resort atmosphere" (services) are what sold us.

I stayed at Point Pleasant back at the end of May, and absolutely loved it. We stayed mid level, right below the lobby/check-in area. I think the unit was E-8. About the only draw back is finding a place to leave the rental car for the evening. We lucked out, but a couple nights thought we would have to leave it elsewhere on the property and take the shuttle back to the room. Agave Terrace is not to be missed. Although a little pricey, it was wonderful.

I posted some photos from my trip on webshots, including some of our room, the view and the views from the lobby.

Would I stay here again? Absolutely.

Ginger & Steve:

Look at Point Pleasant's on-line brochure. The unit that's featured (Superior Suite - the one with the couple on the balcony) is our unit (D-23). (We didn't realize that our unit was the featured unit until after we bought it.)

The view is incredible! We can't wait to get back (in January).

Have a great trip.

F.I.

P.S. Ask for a top of the hill unit (with a cathedral ceiling). Also, try the Agave & Fungi's on the beach. Also, Molly Malone's in Red Hook. Shop at the Marina Market for your breakfast & lunch items( & wine & beer). The pizza place, next to the Marina Market, is good too. Rent a car....it's much easier to get around.

Ginger & Steve:

No, all of the units do not have wrap-around balconies. But, all (to my knowledge) have a balcony.

There are no "walk out to the beach" units either. However, Pineapple Beach is just to the left of Fungi's and there is the smaller, very secluded, Sugar Beach that is only accessible from Point Pleasant.

Also, the view of St. John, Tortola, Yost Van Dyke and a dozen other smaller islands is incredible.

We looked at 7 properties on the East End of STT and chose P.P. (for the view). "You can always get to a beach......but, you can't always have the best view on STT."

I just got back from an 8 day stay at Point Pleasant on Saturday. The Agave Terrace was INCREDIBLE. The chef, Steve Naketa (might be spelled wrong) was fantastic and he treated us like old friends when he made his "rounds" visiting at the tables. One waiter there, Natty, was a prince! He treated my nine year old like he was king of the world. Needless to say, our dinners there were very pleasant - happy child, along with great food and service means happy parents. Pricey yes, but so are a lot of other restaurants. Fungi's was pretty good, too. I like the concept of Point Pleasant. The trails were fun and Sugar Beach gave us our best snorkeling on St Thomas. Pineapple beach left some to be desired, but that probably had to do witht he issues surrounding the G.P. It was great to walk to Coki Beach and Coral World. I found the prices for water equipment rental to be cheaper off the property.
Overall, our vacation was FABULOUS. However, I will NEVER stay at Point Pleasant again. We were in B-16. The view of Water Bay was great, (we had a tree blocking part of our view- not enough to matter. Other units have phenomenal views). I had asked for a unit up on the hill and was told none were available despite August being off season - go figure. That was strike one. Our unit was a superior suite. Size was good and having a kitchen was great. However, we must have had the WORST housekeeper on staff. That would be strikes two and three. There was no bedding on the pull out couch when we went to put my son to bed. Finally at 9:30 a bellman showed up and handed me a plastic bag with sheets in it and left.
We had a constant stream of tiny ants in the kitchen. I had to clean the kitchen before I could cook for every meal and clean thoroughly again as soon as I was done. There were spider webs on the lamps and dust on the lamps, t.v. etc. that were never cleaned while we were there and obviously predated our arrival. The corners were full of filth - especially behind the rattan chairs in the living room. Worst of all the bathroom was dirty. Mildew on the shower curtain, an old rust stained tub, grimy corners, very dirty behind the toilet...I could go on for pages. My complaints resulted in a half hearted effort to actually mop the tile floors in the dining area one day out of seven. The manager never so much as called after I lodged my complaints at the front desk. No offer was made to compensate or to even apologize. There was no safe or data port in the room as advertised and there are currently no laundry facilities available despite the advertisements for same. That may not be a big deal to most, but we packed with the intent to wash clothes half way through the week. I was told to go to the laundromat in Tutu. No offer to get us back and forth and a cab for three to Tutu would have cost around $30 round trip. I also thought the trash around the property should have been picked up more often. It wasn't terrible, but old plastic containers and cans have no place on the outdoor stairs and trails. I envy those of you who live on St Thomas or who vacation there regularly. It was like paradise and St John was beyond our imagination.

I recently returned from a week stay at Point Pleasant. Overall, I was satisfied with the spacious superior suite and the beautiful view. We didn't eat at their restaurants or go to the beaches there. We spent alot of time exploring the island and different beaches. Spent time at Secret Harbor-nice, but we liked Sapphire beach the best, also good snorkeling there. Thought Coki was dirty and saw too many jellyfish. Magen's was nice, but facilities are filthy. You would think they would keep up the place since they charge $. Went to St John twice- loved it so much the 1st time. Favorite beaches there are Trunk and Cinnamon. Also, we rented a car on STT and took it over by ferry to STJ. We never had a problem driving on the roads, the main roads are not bad at all. I would love to stay on STJ next time but if on STT, I would stay at Sapphire for their beach. We talked to people there who were staying in 2BR units right near the beach and they loved it. Anyway, we had a wonderful vacation and hated to leave. STT is spectacular and STJ is paradise!

We returned from a weeks stay at Point Pleasant in St. Thomas. We stayed in a 2 bedroom/2BA condo. It was very spacious, the view was tremendous. We felt it was pretty rustic, however. It needs alot of repair work. I kept thinking if I just had a hammer and a screwdriver and some paint, oh the improvements I could make. The unit was inundated with these little tiny sugar ants. Even in the bed sheets. Ugh. However, if you can overlook leaky facets, rusty appliances, bugs and window air conditioner units which aren't very efficient, then the view and the spaciousness is well worth it. If you walk from the beach level up to the upper level units, which we were in, it is a very strenuous workout. You are on a very steep grade and alot of very steep stone steps. Thought I was going to die the first day, and I'm a triathelete! I was so sore after two days of that walk, that I was limping around! The Agave restaurant is extremely scenic. I found the food to be only mediocre. I was expecting more because of all the hype. Fungi, which is the beach level restaraunt is alot of fun, although again, the food was only mediocre.
After most everything that I have heard and everything that we saw, I would say that Point Pleasant is about as nice as most anything else.
Enjoy the beautiful sunshine....we did!

Stefani:

Wow, sorry you had such a bad experience. The condo we stayed in first at P.P. was D-34. It was super! We then bought D-23....or course we renovated it in June so everyhing is either new or freshly finished in some way. Both times we didn't have problems with bugs, but remember you're in the tropics. Ground level units may have more problems than upper units. We just installed a larger than normal air conditioner (24,000 BTUs vs 18,000 BTUs), so our condo is probably cooler than the other condos. I'll send your message to the hotel manager.....as an owner I don't want P.P. to get a "bad" reputation.

Regards,

F.I.

We were in D-21, and I live in a sub-tropical climate, so I understand bugs! I just would rather not have them on my vacation, especially IN MY BED!!! My kids tell me I'm spoiled, so maybe I just expect too much for my $360/night! Afterall, I could have paid a whole lot more somewhere else!
But, you gotta admit, the place definately needs some repairs and renovating. It has alot of potential, I just don't think they are maintaining the property.
