Hey guys,

We are staying in St Thomas for Jan 10th-15th and are interested in a couple of things. First off we rented a car which we believe was the best choice being that the taxi's are very costly and we plan on doing a lot of exploring. Does anyone have any suggestions for cheaper good food closer to Lindbergh Bay. I am not interested in going to the Mexican restaurant they have on the hotel premises. Also, we are interested in fishing while we are there. Does anyone have any suggestions for a reliable fun fishing boat that is not too costly? We are interested in finding a couple that would want to split the cost with us. I called one boat and for 4 hours they wanted to charge $400. Snorkeling... what is a fun catamaran that is reliable and shows you beautiful reefs for a reasonable full day sail? It's my hubby's first time snorkeling. I can't stand the fact that with some of these catamarans you sail for 7 hours and you are only in the water snorkeling for 2! If you could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

We're going down on the 10th also.

Can't help you with the fishing......however the catamaran snorkeling for 7 hours with 2 hours in the water might be just what a 1st time snorkeler wants.

IMHO the best restaurants are on the East Side. Molly Malones, East End Cafe, etc. also Iggy's and Mims at Bolongo Bay are very good. Nearer the airport you can go to Tickles at Crown Bay.

You can get the "What's Happening This Week" Brochures at the airport....this is a good source for things to do.

Renting a car was wise.

Have a great trip.

F.I.

400 is about the going rate for a half day charter I like to use double header The cost is the same if there are 2 or 6 so if you can find a few more people that would help. Snorkeling i would take the ferry ove to STJ and therre are so many beaches to snorkel off of that are great

Thanks- Actually the only way for me to save somewhat would be to find 4 other people who would be interested in going out. 6 people- 35' boat $550 It would come out to about $92 per person instead of the 32' boat 4 people $500 which comes to $125 per person. Too bad they didn't have that $400 amount that you thought, it would have worked out to my advantage. Thanks for your help!

There are three hotels at Lindberg and they each have a restaurant, not all Mexican. 😉 The Palms at Emerald on Friday nights (double check if that is the right night) has a West Indian Buffet with live steel pan, usually starts around 6pm.

You could pick up some breakfast items and snacks to have in your hotel room from the grocery store, Pueblo is not far and Gourmet Gallery is at the Crown Bay Marina, again not far. And while exploring you could stop at one of the other grocery stores. For lunch you could pick up deli sandwiches at Gourmet Gallery. Also, you could pick up some local food from the place across from the airport; can't think of the name right now. Its right at the corner by the airport's entrance. Look for the Texas BBQ Pit setup, during the day its often along the Crown Bay road or across from Nisky Shopping Center and in the evening its usually on the waterfront in Charlotte Amalie, across from the Holiday Inn hotel. You get a lot of food, good prices and its good BBQ. Another good spot for local food, lunch or dinner, is Victor's Hideout, which is a restaurant, and close to Lindberg. Tickles in Crown Bay Marina is good and not expensive; they have entertainment some nights - music. A bit further but still close is Frenchtown; Hook, Line and Sinker is there and has good food and prices. There are other restaurants in Frenchtown also, some pricier than others.

Doing a daysail is a fun day. There is a good selection listed on this site, at the top of this page click on St. Thomas menu option and then Daysails under Activities. You can contact some of them and compare prices. If you want snorkeling there are a few good from shore snorkeling options at beaches that you can do on your own; for example Coki, Sapphire, Secret Harbor, Cowpet.

Have a great time! When you get back post with your feedback on what you did, where you went.

If you're interested in local food, there's a casual Spanish "restaurant" in Nisky Center (not too far from Lindbergh, but you'll have to drive) that has a buffet. It's good for lunch while the food is freshest. They also have local drinks like passionfruit, tamarind, beer, etc.

There's also a Chinese take-out place in Nisky. Oh, and Subway. I'm pretty sure Subway is open for breakfast.

I'd skip that pizza place if I were you unless it's a Sunday, and you're desperate.

Just a word about the cost of a fishing trip. I know the prices seem exorbitant but keep in mind that a typical 35 or 40 foot inboard fishing boat will burn around 30 gallons and hour, conservatively, when running to the fishing grounds. On a 4hr. trip you can figure about 45 min. ea. way, out and back plus some significant fuel usage while fishing/trolling. At $5 + a gallon, well you can do the math, and then the guy has to pay for the boat, tackle, bait, and help. And they got to make a living. Also a 20% tip is usually in order so the $400. is more like $480. If you do go, ask about who gets the fish.. By the way I do not have or know someone running a fish boat in the Islands and base my figures on my own experience at home.

The Beachcomber Hotel in Lindberg has a good restaurant open for breakfast, they're open from like 7:30AM-10:30 AM and then in the afternoon and evening. On Sundays The Beachcomber has the best deal going on a GREAT Bar-B-Que.

For Breakfast, Tickle or Glady's in town are really good as well. Also, the Delly Deck at Havensight has some KILLER Breakfast Burritos!!

Te Spanish place the other Poster mentioned in Nisky Center is SANTOS. Nisky also has WOK X-PRESS and SUBWAY, but as warned, stay away from the Pizza Place, and stay away from Pizza Hut as well. For a good pie, PIZZA AMORE would be my choice.
