I have several transportation questions:

1. How does one get from the airport on St. Thomas to the ferry at St. John? I'm assuming by taxi - how much would I expect to pay?

2. Is there a jeep rental place within walking distance of the ferry landing on St. John?

3. How much time should I allow for the return trip to St. Thomas to catch the plane home - including ferry crossing, time to get to the airport, how much time should I allow in the airport to get through security, etc.

4. If, because of the timing, we decide we need to stay in St. Thomas the night before we are flying out, can you recommend accommodations in St. Thomas?

Thanks very much.

Good Morning.

You can find the complete list of taxi rates if you select "St Thomas" top of this page and scroll down to taxi rates but the basic rate for 2+ is $11 per person plus any relevant baggage charges. Taxis are right there lined up at the airport and the dispatcher will put you into the correct cab.

You should be at the airport two hours before your departure time and travel time once you're off the ferry (the ferry ride is 15-20 minutes and the schedule is under "Quick Links" top right this page) depends on time of day but you should figure on 25-30 minutes. If you decide to stay on STT for the night a good convenient place is the Best Western Emerald Beach resort which is right on the airport road on a very lovely beach.

Can't help you with the location of the Jeep rental on STJ but I'm sure others will pop in with that info. If you're coming in high season, best to make your jeep reservations now. In the event you can't find a rental on STJ you can do what many do and rent on STT and take the car barge over to STJ. There are several posts on this popular subject on this forum so check out the search engine (it's preset for 30 days so reset for 6 months).

Enjoy your visit!

They are several places in STJ to rent a jeep. We have rented from Conrad's and have had good luck. There is a information booth to the right of the ferry dock when you get off that can give you a map and direct you. I also suggest make your reservations in advanced.

We personally have found it very convenient to rent from Dependable on STT. We have 3 kids and it is so much more convenient just piling everyone in at the airport. The cost is actually bout the same.

I am not sure how the ferry's on STJ are running right now, but I highly suggest being at the ferry dock an hour before you want to depart. The line starts getting long pretty fast and you may not make that ferry. The nice thing about renting on STT, you can get to the doc early explore STT for a couple of hours if you have an early flight.

So renting on STT you avoid taxi and baggage charges times two trips to and from.

Hope this helps

I don't think that getting to the ferrt dock an hour before is even remotely needed.
The ticket line does not even open until 15 minutes before the ferry leaves.
I have NEVER seen anyone be turned away on the ferry to Red Hook. Not saying that it hasn't happened, but after 5 years of living on island and 10 years tvisiting, I have never seen it happen.

Well let me correct myself. I am referring to the car ferry, not the passenger. I guess I should have made that clear. I am just speaking from 2 instances particulary that happened to us one in april and one in june of this year. First I would ask the Ferry company themselves what time they would suggest you arrive. Make sure that they are not the only one running for the week, because that means they will be twice as busy. We come to STJ two times a year for the past 5 years. I have never had to wait either. But guess what this year we did. We arrived 15 minutes early and lo and behold there was our ferry pulling out before it's schedule departure. It was mid day and they had alot of trucks and tankers on the ferry. So my suggestion is you may have no wait at all, but plan accordingly. I would hate to see you miss your flight. Again talk to your rental company if on STT and then to the car ferry that brings you over. If anything you show up early, there is no line, you can go grab a bite to eat and then return. It's island time eh!! 😎
