*HI. we're copming to st, thomas by cruise ship, and read about bob underwater adventure (motorscooter underwater?) what is it, how does it work, and would it b e fun for kids? thanks, david frenkel
Hello David,
I have not done the BOB excursion. I did something similar at Coral World, however you don't have the motorscooter at Coral World - but same concept of having a bubble around your head to breath while walking around underwater. It was fun.
For children I believe it depends on their size/age/weight... not sure they except little kids - at least Coral World had restrcitions on theirs, the persons needs to be able to somewhat support the weight of the head piece, although once in the water you don't really feel it.
Not positive about the BOB set up in terms of personal experience. My understanding from reading about it is: You can go out on a boat with a group of other people taking the excursion. They put everyone into small groups, 6 I believe is the max. One group goes at a time, other people can snorkel or lay out or whatever until its their turn. You are on a BOB, the underwater scooter with bubble for air on your head for about 30 minutes. Cost close to $100 a person. People have told me that they had a great time, lots of fun however didnt see too many fish, or the fish were small. That they felt completely safe, their was a guide with them the whole time. Everyone said the kids liked it, the idea of scootering around underwater. That their are health restrictions that they discuss with you, diabetes, heart trouble ect. Kids are allowed - again not sure to what age they allow. That they give little snacks and drinks on the boat.
Hope that helps.

I think I came across such a device (underwater motorscooter) on Tahiti and took a photo of it. It's the last picture in my Webshots "Tahiti (March 2000)" album and you can see it here:

Though I didn't see it in action, it was pretty clear how it worked - you sit on the seat and put your head up inside the bubble. An air tank is lashed to the front of the vehicle. There is a propellor underneath the seat. It was very cool. Looked like something out of a "James Bond" movie.
