My husband and I will be staying at Secret Harbour Beach Resort in St. Thomas from Sept. 10-16, 2005. I have been doing a lot of research on things to do and places to see, but would like some feedback from those who have visited the island.

Right now I am looking for reasonable priced tours of St. Thomas, and some day or 1/2 day snorkeling trips. We bought our own snorkeling gear because we figured it would save us money. What tours would you advise?

Also, is it worth it to rent a car for 5 days? Is the island difficult to navigate or are locations pretty easy to find?

Thanks for the help.

Angela

Angela: If you are experienced snorkelers, there is no reason to book a snorkel tour, unless you want to go boating also. Put on your gear and walk into the ocean!! Taxis are expensive if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing. If you are happy with sitting on the beach and eating in (either in your unit or the Blue Moon) you could get away with renting for fewer days. About driving around- hug the left side of the road and have the navigator watch for signs, etc. It's an island, pretty hard to go too far off the beaten path!!

Jimmy Loveland has a great "Welcome to St. Thomas" island tour and half day sail, food and drink included. 340-775-9500 is the number if you want a better description and they can book it for you.

New Horizons has a full-day sail that is awesome and the NH II trip to the BVI is incredible (need passports) http://www.newhorizonscharters.com/

The BOB Underwater Adventure is very unique 1/2 day trip...riding motorscooters underwater! Check it out and book it at www.bobusvi.com

If you want some more ideas, just let us know. I would recommend renting a car, as it will be less than paying taxiis, and you will have the freedom to come and go at will. Plus, it's an island...you can't get lost! Haha! Just keep going and eventually you'll wind up where you started! Haha! Seriously, though, the maps are very easy to follow, making finding things a piece of cake. Plus the island is only 12 miles long X 3 wide! Ha! Stay Left!

Thank you for your reply.

In 2003 my husband and I spent a week in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and spent most of our time snorkeling. That is the only snorkeling experience we really have, but snorkeling isn't too difficult. 🙂

Our goal on this vacation is to do as much as possible and see the island, on our trip to Jamaica we didnt' really leave the resort too often.

I think that we will definitely rent a car for a few days because the taxis fares seem like they will add up fast.

Thank you Marty!

I will definitely have to check out those tours. I know I contacted New Horizons and they said that they were not available until September 24th.

Are tours pretty easy to book when you arrive, or do you find that a lot of them are sold out?

Angela: This time of year, you will have to call around when you get here. You will find that a few of the boats are not available during September.
