I'm going to St. Thomas soon, but haven't been there in 15 years. I can remember a banner up over the main street downtown that warned islanders that tourism was important to the whole island. It made me, as a tourist, more conscious. We had booked hotel by the airport that was new at the time, but in exploring the island, came across Point Pleasant. It was so beautiful and we asked to see a unit. They were huts on the hillside with really cool vaulted ceilings. I've noticed that many villas have these same ceilings now. What are they called? Point Pleasant gave us a really good rate right on the spot so we changed hotels. I remember going next door to the Hyatt for drinks. Drinks were free because Hyatt guests had no electricity that day. They had to be paying 4 times what we were paying and I don't think they had the views we had. What ever happened to the Hyatt? What is there now? If I remember right, as you continue along the beach, you come to a great, albeit small, snorkeling beach. Is that Coki? How far is Coral World from there?
It looks like Point Pleasant may not be so pleasant anymore. None of the units would work for a family, anyway.
I'm looking forward to seeing St. Thomas and St. John again.
Point Pleasant is nice. We loved it there! 🙂
Coral World is right next to Coki.
I think the Hyatt is the resort next to Point Pleasant that is currently shut down (supposed to be opening up soon again..it's been closed for quite a while).
Have fun on your trip!
toledo: Here is an article on the former Hyatt/Renaissance/Palace resort: http://www.virginislandsdailynews.com/index.pl/article_home?id=17602884
It was also a Stouffer's for a while. I have vaulted ceilings & never heard them called anything special.
toledo,
I am another "old timer" on STT. I am not old...but have been going there since my parents started dragging me and my brother in the 60s. We lived there in the 70s, as kids....and then kept visiting through the 80s and til NOW.
I am not sure about a special name for the ceilings...some call them vaulted or cathedral. They allow air to flow and heat to rise and settle away from the person on the floor level - perfect for the tropics.
i know how it is to LONG to return. I hadn't been back in a long time and when I got married I started to dream about STT --- really dream in my sleep. I told my hubby that I needed to go back there - something was calling. We went - and I haven't missed a year since. It is magical!
You will LOVE going back after os many years...but it will also hurt your heart. So much has changed. Life goes on!
Enjoy...

Hip Roofs!
Hip roofs are the most popular roof you will find in the islands! Yes, Blu is right, it allows the heat to go up and keep you cool! 🙂
