My husband & I are going to St John next week with our 10 month old baby and several other adult relatives. Can anyone recommend a snorkeling trip we could do with a baby? Is there perhaps a private boat we could rent? We just need something with some shade and somewhere to lay her down for a nap. Do most restaurants offer some kids food, i.e. grill cheese, pizza, etc? Any other do's & don'ts you can recommend with a baby? This is our first major trip with her. Thanks!

Katie, I can not help you with the Boat trip but I can tell you that most STJ restaurants are kid friendly. Wehave traveled there five time in the last three years (we're going back in two weeks) with our kids and have found the majority of the restaurants to be accommodating. If you do not see a kids menu ask. Never hurts to call ahead (reservations).
The fine dining establishments (expensive) are the only places I can think of that are not as kid friendly.

Make sure you sun screen your child repeatedly! You can get a burn in the shade!
Take all necessary medicines with you.

Enjoy!

Katie: Why in the world would you even consider taking a 10 month old baby with you while you go snorkling on a boat?? Will you have that much fun worrying about a child that young not falling in the water while you are snorkling? Now for the restaurants, just how much can a child of 10 months eat? And what can he ar she eat? A large pepperoni pizza or a big cheese burger with fries? Leave the kid at home with gramma and grampa and have a great time!!!

Katie,
I'm sure the advice above was well intended..... however, there are those who will not ever understand why someone would choose to travel with their child. My son is now 17 and took his first trip when he was 5 weeks old so I can tell you that I GET IT!
As far as restaurants go, Frequent Visitor is correct, most all of the restaurants are child friendly. I might avoid places like Stone Terrace or Asolare, just based on their more "romantic" ambiance. Try Morgan's Mango, Fish Trap, Lime Inn, ZoZo's and Cafe Roma (very good pizza)
I also concur with the warning about sunscreen. Use it very very liberally and reapply often. Make sure the baby stays well hydrated. You can stock up on baby type snacks at one of the supermarkets, Starfish etc.
Whatever you do, relax and have fun!!

i have to agree that a trip to the USVI isnt the best with a baby.
the sun can burn a fair skinned adult in less than a half an hour during peak sunlight.
medical attention isnt best, compared to the states
the long flight, depending on where you are from, can be demanding on a baby
obviously snorkling with the baby is out
Other than that.....
I am sorry i am not trying to be negative but point out some things you might not have thought of.
Hope you enjoy if you bring the baby!
Maybe bring a nanny?(or granny)

Have a great time with your family. Babies and kids seem to work in one of two extremes either they really like what the water feels like when you first put them in at the beach or they totally freak out. LOL> Hope your baby likes it. 🙂

I think your biggest challenge may be the flight - particurly if you live say on the west coast - so a long flight to get here. Perhaps the baby will sleep the whole flight. But a little hat so when you are at the beach its head is protected. Also lots of sunblock as mentioned.

As for boats; I have a friend who's baby was out on the boat before 10 months. Was always very good, slept on the boat, slept at the beach on a blanket under a big umbrella under a tree. The mom used sunblock liberally and the baby never got burnt.

As for charters - sure you could take a charter - lots of them out of St. John and St. THomas - when you find one that seems like what you want to do - ask if they have a cabin perhaps - many sail charters - the owners live on them so they usually have cabins/living room area... bedroom, bathroom... so perhaps the baby can be out of the sun and nap in that room. Only thing I would think - is some charter operators might worry about the baby - as a liability. Ask - its the only way you will know for sure.

As for snorkeling - you can go to Trunk Bay... and snorkel there with the baby- one of the adults at a time can stay on the beach and watch the little one while others snorkel. Cinnamon the same. Bring a (gosh cant think of what its called) the carrier things that go over the shoulders like a back pack that the baby sits in so you dont have to carry them with your arms. LOL... 🙁 the name really is not coming to me. In any case bring one of those so you can hike with the baby also - Cinnamon has some neat ruins, Annaberg as well.

Enjoy. --Islander

Have a great time.
