I've only been a forum reader for a couple of weeks, but in that short time, I've noticed a lot of animosity towards anyone who dares to say St Johns. Yes, it's wrong to say St. Johns when referring to St John, but everywhere we go, people who are not familiar with something on a day to day basis make similar mistakes. Let me axe you a question, do you ever say ATM machine? Or PIN number? Sometimes it not critical to be pacific about it and correct everyone. 🙂 We all know what what the OP was asking. Once they visit the island, they will learn and correct themselves. And if not, then Vanna just won't turn that letter over for the rest of us! 😉

Animosity? I've never seen any animosity in any of the gentle corrections which are made all the time about the fact that St John has no "'s". You say that once people visit they will learn and correct themselves and that couldn't be further from the truth. I've heard people who've been here several times refer to "St Johns" because nobody ever did correct them. Not sure I understand the correlation between calling an ATM an ATM or a PIN a PIN when it comes to mispronouncing an island's proper name but just trying to answer the question that you axed (I'm hazarding a guess that "axed" is the past tense of "axe"?) but I guess we can all try to be more atlantic than pacific in future. 😀

The "s" added to St. John is like nails on a blackboard to me (do they still have blackboards these days?). It grates on my nerves like bad grammar. I really can't ignore it and I don't consider a gentle correction to the writer as "animosity". Animosity :-X is quite another thing altogether and is rarely found on this board. We're just sensitive about the "s" thing, that's all. Cut us some slack.:-) Have a nice day.;)

The island is St John. It is not St Johns. That is a city on Antigua. 2 different places. I don't think anyone has anomosity, just one of those pet peeves that many of us have.

Back in my rental manager days I had a couple not call from the airport or the dock. This was before cell phones were common, so I had no way to get a hold of them.
As I was leaving the office, they called me from Antigua. They had rented a home on St. John and had their Travel Agent book their flights. They told her they were going to be renting a house in St Johns.
Not common, but it does happen.

Yeah, folks are real picky about that one...and no, not many blackboards around anymore...now they are whiteboards mostly.

Pote: I don't think it is animosity at all. It is kindly local knowledge being shared with the viewing audience. Have you ever been to San Francisco? Do you know what San Franciscans do when someone calls it "Frisco"? They throw you to the great whites circling Alcatraz. Here we just gently remind you. 😉

Now, can we work on the spelling of Magens Bay?

and i thought i was the only one who'd experienced such a call from renters! their friends were supposed to visit and told the captain to set the course for st. john's and ended up in antigua. fortunately they were able to reach their friends via cel to let them know what happened as they were quite concerned when they did not arrive as expected on st. john usvi.

The English language, gotta love it...until you try to use it!

While some might resist correcting slight differences, 'slight' is a relative term. We had a director of our company visiting from Europe. Multilingual (unlike we Americans) so no real problem right? We had to visit clients in Virginia and to our horror he seemed to have a problem with pronouncing the state name. Kind of like the ask v axe thing except he pronounced it Vergina. I'll let your linguistic skills catch up with what it sounded like with and accent but he did this through the entire meal because no one felt comfortable correcting him.
I guess they just thought he was from out of town.
