I am taking my girlfriend to St John for the week and I have couple of questions...

We are looking at renting a villa, is this safe, are there any problems with burglary. What would be the least safe place to rent a villa on st jonh?

Both my girlfriend and I are reggae aficianado's, are there any reggae clubs or good places to listen to reggae on St John?

We have heard about Duffy's St Thomas from a friend, and I have heard there is one on St John, is the St John Duffy's as good(happening) as the one on St Thomas, or should I take the ferry over?

We are going to rent a car....would a standard car be good for the roads, or would we need a jeep to drive around?

Thanks in advance for answering my questions,
Traveler

Sorry, but I forgot to ask about food.. I like to dine local wherever I go, what places should I avoid, and where should I go.

Also, is there any Chinese or Asian food on the island?

STJ has a very low crime rate---which is not to say a no crime rate. Renting a villa is a very safe option. You should take normal precautions (i.e. lock up, use the villa's safe if there is one, don't leave desirable stuff out in the open). There have been burglaries. There is a rare armed robbery. This is a very safe, low crime place.

There's a superb local reggae band---Inner Visions--that plays regularly at a place called Fred's. I first saw them in the mid-80s on my first trip to STJ and some of the same guys are still playing. There's live music at several places on STJ, either in Cruz Bay or Coral Bay. But catching Inner Visions at Fred's is about as good as it gets.

Get 4wd. Not so much for off-roading as for traction on the roads. The roads on STJ are steep and winding. They become very slick when wet ( and it doesn't take much rain for them to get slick). Also, the driveways to some villas are steep and rocky.
