My wife and brother-in-law and I just returned from St. John about 2 weeks ago (snowing here now), and I finally got through the underwater photos we took while we were there. We snorkled Salt Pond, Waterlemon, Francis, Honeymoon, and even took some private charters. This was our first experience with an underwater digital, and I must say that I was very impressed. You can see our online gallery at:

This should give you a pretty good idea of what you can expect to see while you are there. Our "above water" photos can be seen at:

I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as we enjoyed taking them!

Outstanding photos! What times of day did you shoot them?

I thought our disposable worked OK but these are brilliant (a little Guniness humor). Now I'm really jealous.
What brand of camera did you use and were any filters or post modifications made? I remeber reading you did something to get such great outdoor photos as well.

Thanks for the replies! I took most of them between 10 am (too cold before that to get in the water!) and 4 pm. All of these were taken when the sun was out and strongly illuminating stuff underwater.

The pictures were taken with an Olympus C4000 (typical 4 megapixel point-and-shoot) with an Olympus underwater housing. Yes, I did a fair amount of post processing. The key is to get as close to the subject as possible - and then get even closer. This makes taking fish pictures really tough because they just don't stay put. No filters were used, but flash was used on most of them (should have been all of them).
