My husband and I just got back from St. John Saturday. We had a fabulous time! We stayed at Gallows Point and rented a jeep all week. We went to all of the North Shore beaches at least once and many of them twice. We snorkeled at least 2 times per day. The food was great. We found all of the people very friendly.
I have been reading this message board for months and going to other internet sites. I thank everyone who steered me in the right direction. We almost stayed at St. Thomas. St. John is so beautiful!
The first day we did get our jeep later than expected (island time) but drove to the Trunk Bay overlook. I was in awe. I couldn't believe how beautiful it looked. It was just like the pictures. We went to that beach right away.
For snorkeling we liked Trunk Bay. You have to swim all the way around the cay and go very early, but it was one of the best. We also liked Waterlemon which was probably the best, but the beach is just rock and the sea urchins make the entry there not as nice. We liked Hawksnest, Francis and Caneel too. The key is to go very early in the morning. In front of Gallows is pretty good too.
All of our food was good. We liked Fish Trap, ZoZo's and of course Joe's BBQ. We liked Woody's for the drinks, food and service.
We did some hiking, but it was hot and buggy on the trails.
The beaches were beautiful. It is proably one of the best vacations I have ever had! I really want to go back!
I took a lot of pictures. I would post some, but I don't know how.
Thanks again to everyone for the advice!

Hello Terri,

Thanks for sharing your trip with us. How was Gallows Point as far as the accommodations? Who did you rent your car from and how did you find driving on the left side of the road?

A board member, Gaston, set up a section for pictures at http://www.flickr.com/groups/vinow/ and there are other free photo services. We don't have one on the site as yet, but definately if you get your pictures uploaded post a link so we can look at them.

The accomodations at Gallows were great. We had a wonderful sunset view. We had an upper loft room. It was clean, well furnished. We are very glad we chose Gallows.
We rented from Cool Breeze. We were supposed to get the car at 8:30 am and it ended up being 1 pm. Other than that the car was OK. My husband drove. I don't think the left-handed side bothered him as much as the steep hills and turns and the other drivers almost hitting him. It is a little crazy. When we turned in the jeep Friday afternoon he said "Let's go straight to Woody's to get a beer!"
I will try to send the pictures when I figure it out. I took over 150 so will need to condense.

Hello Terri,

Thanks for the followup about Gallows and the car rental. The way your husband felt after driving on St. John is the way I feel when driving in the states (even when I am just the passenger). I think its all a matter of what you are used to in terms of knowing the roads and also the driving conditions. Again, glad you had a good time!
