*Is it really necessary to have a car? Main purpose of trip is to relax at the resort. Only plan to go out to eat at night and maybe visit a beach for a day.

What resort are you at? I can understand (only just) staying at Caneel and not leaving (seven wonderful beaches) if total relaxation is what you are in need of, but if you are staying at the Westin do leave the property and see all the fabulous beaches that STJ has to offer (the Westin has the worst beach on island) you will miss so much if you don't leave the grounds. You don't need a car to do that but it is such a fun island to explore, and taxi's to the beach and taxi's into "town" for meals nightly are not expensive but will add up doing it daily. Taxi's are always available at the Westin and Caneel.

Oh.. don't do that.. you have to get out onto the island or you miss the whole point of being on STJ... you can do the resort thing anywhere, but the beaches are where it's at on STJ ! Get a car and get out there !!! Hope you have a wonderful time whatever you do ...

i'd agree with Pia. While not essential, consider a jeep rental for a day or two just to see the rest of the island at your own pace. It's a decision you can make once on the island, not one you have to make now. You can certainly do the restaurants in cruz Bay from either the Westin or Caneel with very available taxi's. I can understand the need to veg out. Do it myself on STJ!
