Is there any way to get from St. John to Water Island without going to St. Thomas first to catch the ferry? Is it possible to get a private water taxi? How much would that cost?

It would cost an arm and a leg - lauging - to take a water taxi from St. John around St. Thomas to Water Island. I had inquired about it earlier this year for someone - was told a hundred plus. Can't remember the exact figure. Yes you have to take the ferry to St. Thomas, then a taxi to the ferry for Water Island and then a ferry to Water Island.

If there are going to be a few of you, it might be best to just rent a small boat.
