We will be visiting St John July 14th-22nd and staying at Caneel. Trying to decide if it will be better to rent a car/jeep or to use taxi service. We are huge beach people and will use transportation mainly for dinner at night and for getting from beach to beach.(not sure if we need car or taxi to go from beach to beach or not) Any advice on this matter will be greatly appreciated!

You're going to want a Jeep. There's so much to see and do. A Jeep will give you the freedom to do whatever you want.

We stay at gallows and for many years never rented a car. About three years ago we started to rent even tho' it sometimes really is only to get to a Northshore beach and back.

Here's what you might want to consider, since you're staying at Caneel. At Caneel there is a parking lot with loads of taxi's. If you decide you're just going into town or going to another north shore beach for the day, just use them and you'll save some money. Then decide while you're there if you might want to just rent for a day at a time or maybe for two days to go further out where taxis are loath to go. There are lots of car rental firms on the island and your bound to find a car.

/did I just recommend to someone staying at Caneel to save money, LOL

I agree. Rent a vehicle. You could manage without one if you intended to pretty much stay at Caneel---stay there, swim there, snorkel there, eat there---and it certainly is gorgeous there. But I would encourage you to explore the island and eat at different places. I'd suggest picking up a guide book or two. We use "Feet, Fins & 4wd" and "St John: Off the Beaten Track".

They really don't add up that fast with just two people.

We took the taxi's for about 8 years before we rented a vehicle. And for us it meant carrying a bag and beach chairs from gallows to town. From Caneel it's even easier.
