Assuming that we'll be finding a reasonable flight at some point my wife and I are headed to St. John (Gallow's) the week of 6/18-25-

Can you reccommend some things that we should definitely not miss?

We like to hike, day/trip and visit great restaurants...from hole in the wall gems to more upscale (if the food is worth it)-

We've heard good things about Fish Trap and Zozo's and a few others-

Are there any other experiences that we should definitely plan on?

My wife Cate likes to horseback ride so she'll probably do that one day and we're both runners- so we're pretty active but we also like our share of down time to relax-

This is our first time in St. John so we can't wait

You sound entirely too healthy and enrgized for STJ!

Just kidding of course but I do believe 'Island time' will do a world of good for both of you. Running may not be part of your plans once you see the island, but certainly hiking is a must. I always suggest the Reef Bay hike sponsored by the Parks Department. You can do it alone, but then you need to find parking, hike down hill 2 hours and then make the trip back up. Beautiful views coming and going but the Parks Dept will take you to the trail head, guide you down past the Petroglyphs to the Sugar Plantation ruins and then ferry you from Reef Bay back to Cruz Bay.
There are numerous other trails to take on the island and I suggest you buy the book 'STJ Off the Beaten Track'(link at top of page). It is worth it's weight in gold.
Suggest a day sail to spots around STJ or over to BVI. There are numerous offerings from STT or STJ (Cruz & Coral Bay). If you are interested, come back to the board for suggestions.
I like Tage and Ten Tables for upper end dining in Cruz. Skinny Legs makes the best Burgers in Coral Bay.

We're not that healthy LOL-

Thanks for the tips- I just ran a marathon- and I doubt we'll be running much-

The hike you mentioned sounds awesome-

Can you do day trips to like Tortolla?

And would you reccommend a jeep rental for the entire week?

Hey thanks again-

Jim

Trips to BVI are available from a multitude of charters, or you can ferry across on your own. I suggest the charters. White Wing out of Coral Bay is worth a visit and for more of a party time, New Horizons II out of Red Hook gets a great deal of coverage on this board. Depends on your preference, budget, etc.

Definitely rent the car. You can get a better price on STT and ferry across to STJ, but if you want local support and parking in Cruz the STJ rental is better deal. Get a 4WD if you want to explore southern end, Lamshure Bays, etc. otherwise you can reach 80% of the beaches in standard sedan.

I have to say, there wasn't a bad meal anywhere we ate on StJ. Mongoose junction has a great little bar/bistro, that we had breakfast at, complete with chickens under our feet. I concur about the best burgers being at Skinny legs. I loved the stories that came from the bartender there and the umbrella in the hole in the roof. Check in at the national park office in Cruz bay they are really helpful if you enjoy snorkeling as well as hiking. We found some great hideaway beaches at their suggestion. Waterlemmon Cay - I think this is the name, it has been a few years since we were there. North side of the island a bit of a hike to the waters edge, but the best snorkeling I've seen in various VI locations. Personally, I didn't find much that interested me on St. Thomas. Too crowded and comercialized. You may want to try Virgin Gorda though with the baths, hike around while you are there, Spring bay is just to the North and is also nice. Try eating at Top of the Baths. Enjoy your vacation. St. John is one of those places that you will relive for a long time.

The majority of restaurants on StJ are outstanding. Although the fish trap comes reccommended from many sources my family and I have never had good meals there. It's just average and nothing special.

I would highly reccommend the following, The Stone Terrace is outstanding, expensive for down on StJ but were from NY so were somewhat used to those prices. Morgans mango is a lot of fun and has good food great drinks. Asolare is an excellent choice as well. Our favorite is the Lime Inn, casual, great specials, and fantastic food. Hit Woody's for happy hour for a bit fun especially if you like to have a few pops. ZoZos is outstanding for sunsets but I have never eaten there, we have only heard great things about it. We have children under the age of 5 and they do not permit that which I understand.

If you take a trip to the other side of the island hit Skinny Legs for a burger.

Have fun. Were going again in Auguust and have too get my fix talking about it
