We are visiting St John later this month and are wondering what problems we may encounter if we rent a car from Budget at the St. Thomas airport and rely on the car ferry to & from St John. My primary concern is our 8:30 AM departure from St. Thomas... Can we rely on the 6AM car ferry from St John to Redhook and make it to the airport with sufficient time to catch the 8:30AM flight out of St. Thomas? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thks & Regards...

Paul-

Being the eternal optimist that I am, I would take my chances on getting to the dock early to survey the situation and bet on getting on the ferry. You might want to have a "tip" (bribe) in hand just in case you arrive and find commercial vehicles lined up and waiting to board. Though, I have never tried to catch a 6am ferry (I can barely wake up before 8), so I don't know how likely you are to encounter heavy ferry traffic at that time of day.

Some might encourage you to spend your final night on STT as a way of avoiding any potential problems.

If you really get nervous about it, but feel strongly about stayong on STJ on the last night, consider bringing the car to STT the day before (leaving it in Red Hook overnight) and using the people ferry to get back to STJ. Then use the people ferry on the AM of your flight, get your car from wherever you left it in Red Hook and off you go. Of course, the viability of this option depends on how far your villa is from Cruz Bay and how much luggage you'll have.

Maybe someone else can comment on 6am ferry traffic going from STJ to STT.

Great advice! I'll do my homework when on island and size up the situation a few days before we depart. I'm not too concerned, the worst case is we miss the flight and catch the next one. Thanks again!
