I've read several posts and am very excited to go to the islands. I'm planning a honeymoon to St. John for the first week in April 2005. Although I've read that many people are more impressed with Caneel Bay resort, I was only able to afford the Westin (through a special discount.) Is this hotel much worse? Are the accomodations nice enough to be a romantic honeymoon getaway for me and my new wife?
Two other quick questions: For the first week in April, how is the weather, and how crowded is the island at this time.
I'd be grateful for any feedback or advice.

Not to worry at all! The Westin is a fabulous resort. I have never stayed there, so I can't comment on rooms, service, food, etc. But, it looks very nice and i have heard great things. The downside is that the beach isn't as nice as many of the other beaches on the island...esp. Caneel beaches. But, you can always go to other beaches. Caneel is really a different type of resort. Caneel is very old world tropical, quiet and elegant. Some would call it primitive (lack of TV, phones). It really depends on what you want in a resort. Those who love Westin might not sleect Caneel, regardless of prices...and vice versa.
Please don't worry. You will ove the Westin. How can you not enjoy a fabulous resort on St. john, of all places!
1. Canel Bay is better
2. WHO cares - you will be amazed at EVERYTHING on that Island and spend very little time at the Westin.
Can I ask a question. When we were planning our trip I could never get a firm $$ amount on how much a room was.
We setteled on the Tradewinds cottage.
What kind of prices are they asking at the Westin.
Thanks

I'm honeymooning on St. John this June - we were looking at the Westin and other resorts but decided on a luxery villa with a pool. What could possibly be more romantic than your own private house and own private pool with a great view! With all the amentaties including washer/dryer, grill, linens...!!?? Can't beat that! You have plenty of time to save $$ for something like that as well. You don't have to worry about the place being crowded since it will only be you two.
I am with Diane! Villa's are the way to go.
I stayed at the Westin this past December. My first trip to this resort and we were not disappointed. If you have done your homework well, you will not be surprised to encounter the man-made beach, expensive (and sometimes just average) meals, hilly terrain for villas and some rooms and kids/families (depending on what time of the year you go.) I have read complaints about the quality of service and expense of staying there but remember you are dealing on island time. We had absolutely no complaints about the quality of our room nor the service - in fact, we got our in-room fridge within 10 minutes of placing the call and when we mentioned the bouginvilla was overgrown and blocking our view, it was trimmed down by the next morning. A large wedding tent also blocked our view one day - we got a $40 meal voucher and apologies without asking. This is for a room that we basically slept in. We were in St. John and spent our time exploring the gorgeous island and beaches, snorkeling and trips to Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda. - we heard one couple complain about broken tile in their bathroom and that was all they moan about for an hour. Yikes, stay home then! All kidding aside, we would not hesitate to return to the Westin.
Check out www.the-retreat.us for a really romantic villa! Garage doors open up so the whole side of the villa is open to the ocean. And it has a private pool and hot tub...and the property is very private....who needs clothes? The owner has been great to us and can charge a daily rate instead of the weekly. We picked the villa over Caneel Bay because it was SO much cheaper...and very private. We're coming there to celebrate our 10th. Good luck!
My last trip to St John was 1999 , we stayed at Maho Bay for most of the week and spent one night at the Westin. We are going back this June for Carnival and staying at the Westin for the entire trip. We had a great time at both places. The Westin will be perfect for a honeymoon but do try to get over to Maho Bay , I thought that it had some of the best snorkeling on the island.
