This is my first post to VINOW. I am thinking about a January trip to St. John. It is the only time (other than the summer) that two families can travel with our college age children. What can you tell me about the weather during January...and also the scuba diving. Does the water temp fluctuate much? I would appreciate any information or suggestions. We are looking for a villa/house for 6 people. THANK YOU!!!

Welcome!
There is a plethora of information on this site. I just cut and paste the statement below from the menu items above. You will find more on climate and weather under “About the USVI”

Temperatures
Water temperatures in the Virgin Islands do not change greatly from summer to winter, however the 4 or 5 degree change is noticeable to those acclimated to consistently warm tropical weather. In the summer months the water temperature is about 83 degrees and in the winter about 79 degrees.

I cannot say anything about scuba, but the snorkeling is some of the best in the Caribbean. St John, being about 65% National Park, offers the opportunity to enjoy an island that has not been over developed.

If you can I would recommend a late May or the first two weeks of June for your getaway. You will find prices better and less people than in January. But if you live in the frozen North – St John can be very lovely in January.

Start looking at Villas in St John
Remember there are very few directly on the beach.
Beaches are open to all
However the island is small and there beaches all the way around.
From White Sand to Rocks

We have been using Catered To with great results, but there are a lot of good companies on island. It is fun to window shop and day dream.

We've traveled to St. John in January (and will return again in January 2011) the weather was perfect, the water temps were warm and the snorkeling and diving was awesome. We've stayed two times at Estate Fortsberg overlooking Coral Bay and Hurricane Hole. Great place for traveling with college aged kids, Lots of room and privacy for all and the view from the hot tub and pool is to die for.

January is a fantastic time to visit (but so are most other months 🙂 ) One piece of advice, once you have your dates nailed down, book a rental car. We have a limited number of rental cars available and we do run out sometimes in high season. So to be safe, book a car right after you have your flights and villa confirmed. Have a great time!
