We are staying in St. Thomas for one week in July. I've seen some people say that taking the ferry to St. John for the day is a must. I was just wondering what there is to do for the day. We have a 2 year old, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance!

Hey Kasey!
I would go to STJ towards the end of you trip on a day that there aren't too many cruise ships in STT. There are "cruiser" tours offered by the taxi drivers that are OK, but I would cajole one of car rental companies to rent you a car for the day. (Start w/ Conrad Sutton, anyone can tell you where he is, a short walk from the ferry dock) Are you taking a child seat? I would drive around the island taking the south shore road maybe stoping at Maho or Cinnamon Beach (kid friendly food there). Go on to Annaberg Ruins (an old Sugar Mill) Then take Centerline Rd. Back to Cruz Bay and the the adults can have lunch at the Lime Inn. Shop at Mongoose Junction afterwards, neat shops that are different than STT. The go down to Wharfside beside the ferry dock have a frozen something frozen from the Beach Bar before you go back. The drive has lots of very memorable vistas. If yo like to snorkel I think it's better on STJ. I'm sure many more will chime in soon!
Thanks Wes!
Unless someone is going to sit out and watch your 2 year old while the other snorkels, you should limit your visit to sightseeing (beautiful beaches), shopping/eating in Cruz Bay and walking the ruins as Wes suggested. If you are comfortable with your 2 year old in the water, I suggest Hawksnest and Cinnamon beaches to start with. Trunk is 'the' STJ beach, but they charge a fee and for your day trip you might feel obligated to stay there since you paid rather than see more of the island.
I believe Wes meant to say North Shore Road as the one you will take to see all of the major North Shore beaches. It will also take you to the Annaberg ruins before turning south toward Coral Bay and hooking up with Centerline Road.
Check the 'Cruise Guide and Schedule' link at the top of this page late June to see when the low periods for ships will be. As it is the low season, car rental should be a little easier and cruise traffic a little less.
While STT is beautiful in its own right, while you are riding the ferry back to STT, be prepared to wonder how you are going to get back to STJ in the future. It has that effect on everyone. 🙂
Thanks Chris I did mean North Shore. Have a heck of a time finding Cinnamon on the South Shore Rd.
