Hi Islander:

Are you the same "Islander" that answers questions on the Cruise Critic Messageboard? If so, thanks for info you provided for our group the St. John Jumpers about getting to St. John from Crown Bay.

We are coming to St. Thomas on the Emerald Princess on September 5th. My husband and I plan to rent a jeep for a tour of St. John and wanted to find out how many churches their are on St. John! My husband's family lived on St. Croix during the 60's and 70's. My father-in-law told my husband that he helped build a church on St. John and that his name is on the "cornerstone". We are hoping to check out the churches that were built in the 60's or 70s' to see if we can find it.

Any help or info you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi Cheryl & Dennis,

There aren't all that many churches on St. John. Does your father-in-law remember what religion and where it was located?

In Cruz Bay, three come to mind.

A Catholic Church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. They have built a new church in the last few years. Photos of the old church are available at: http://islands.vi/~olmc/olmcphotosoldchurch.htm. Not sure if the old one was completely removed to make way for the new one, but if this is the one then you likely can contact them to check.

There is a Lutheran Church: Nazareth Lutheran Church. And there is St. Ursula's Anglican Church. Not sure when these were built.

PS: Regarding the information on getting to St. John; you're welcome. Is the group not going anymore, just the two of you?

I did some digging around the STJ historical society site.
The Lutheran church was built in 1955 and I can't find any info on the Anglican church but that timefram sounds about right.
I would contact the historical society, I am sure they can help

Islander: Thanks for the info! This is a great beginning! My father-in-law passed away in 1988 and hubby just thought it would a fun thing for us to try to find the church his dad told him about so long ago. My guess is that the church was in the Cruz Bay area so that will eliminate some of them. In the mid to late 60's St. John must have been a sleepy little island!

Our group is traveling over on the 8:00am ferry from Red Hook but once we get to St. John we are all doing our own thing! So far we have a group of 12!

stjohnjulie: Thanks for the link to the St. John Churches. I have printed it out and I will try to find out where each is located.

Xislandgirl: Thanks so much for the info/link to the Historical Society. Probably the best assistance with eliminating some of the churches. I will zip off an e-mail to them to see if they can assist!

Thanks so much to all of you!!!
