I'm thinking of visiting St. John this summer and was wondering exactly how crowded the island gets during Carnival. Is it harder to get around and find sparsely populated beaches?

We stayed in Cruz Bay for Carnival a few years ago and it was a little crowded (depends on what you are used to I guess). We still were able to find quiet beaches around the island during that period but then again we had a Jeep and went all over hell and creation like we always do.

If you have never been to a carnival go to the one on St. John. It is smaller than the one on STT b ut it is VERY interesting. It never seems to end. There are big time crouds during the carnival but all this can be overlooked .

Actually most of the crowds come over on the evening ferries from STT to enjoy the festivities in the Carnival Village. During the day not much of a crowd directly related to the carnival other than during the wonderful parade.

Lots of pix on my pix site. Might even get the ones from '07 up if I could get my lazy a** in gear.
