We will be staying Caneel Bay on St John the last two weeks in May and I was planning to rent a vehicle for at least part of the stay. However as I started to look at rental agencies I came across an age requirement to rent (Cool Breeze) of at least 25 years of age (no problem) and NO MORE THAN 65 years old (problem). Does anyone know if this is an individual agency requirement or universal of all agencies in the island?

I am not sure about the age requirement, but you might want to inquire at St John Car Rental. It is located just 1 block from the ferry and very easy to rent from. Caneel Resort probably has more info on all the age requirements for each rental car agency. You might check with them and have them check around. For the price you pay to stay there you may as well have them do some foot work for you.

Try some of the others

Which age is the problem? I am familiar with the limited rentals or not renting to under 25 but am not familiar with the limits on seniors. The age 25 issue is pretty standard but definately check with some of the others to double check.

Islander,

Thanks for the links. I have already checked some of them and the under 25 is pretty standard with no upper limit mentioned. When I checked at Cool BreezeJeep Rental, ( http://www.coolbreezecarrental.com/) the not over 65 upper limit was listed. This is the problem for me >Curmudgeon 🙁

I am curious as to whether this is a universal upper limit on St John and is is not listed on the various sites or is specific to Cool Breeze. On the other hand it may prove to be a benefit in not having to go shopping (as often).

You may want to consider renting a car from the Airport in St. Thomas. I'm sure you can find one of the National Rental companies like Avis to rent you a car at a more reasonable rate than St. John as well. It's an easy ferry ride across to st. John ($35.00 round trip). Besides it give you the freedom to check out St. Thomas if you like. The north side, Hullbay, is really charming. Good Luck!
