31 days and counting!
Here is my question: We are part of a large group meeting up and staying on St John. Three of the families will take the 5:30 Charlotte Amalie Ferry and will arrive in St John at 6:15 to 6:30 PM depending on "island time".
The car rental agency closes at 6 PM. Is it ridiculous to ask the agency to stay opened 1/2 hour for three cars? I am trying to see both sides here...the overly excited vacationers that we are who just want to start the vacation the next day and not have to worry about going back to pick up a car AND the tired business owner who understands that his/her livelihood relies on tourists, but just wants to end his/her day.
Also, does any one know of a car rental agency on St John that has late pick up hours?
Thanks!
Ok New England, so we'll know you all by the Red Sox and Patriots hats right? We'll be there the following week and in previous trips have had trouble getting there by the 6PM bell. We've always rented from Conrad Suttons and they have always agreed to stay open till 7PM to allow us to get our car. They know us crazy New englanders who can't wait to get going on our trips and sometimes the shuttles aren't what we want to do that early evening. So I'd try them- always dependable, friendly, cooperative. Have fun and save some warm sunny wetha' for those of us from Foxboro!
Karrieb...thanks for the input. We do have reservations w/Conrad so I'll have my sister in law beg and plead! Most likely we will have Eagles and Phillies hats on as we are transplants (no disrespect inteneded to the Pat's and Sox fans!!!)
None taken, I don't follow sports and our trip will be too short this time for hubbie to look for a screen to watch the Patriots- so probably no cap for him either. We didn't have pull the arms of anyone at Conrads about staying open late, we just emailed them and they were responsive right away. I think they did ask for a call from the STT airport with an estimated arrival time and we did hussle (actually I literaly ran up from the dock to get the keys just to show them I was respectful of their time) once we got there so we didn't hold them up. Good luck!
Thanks Karrieb! I actually get in at 1 PM (WHOOO HOOOO), but the group of 3 families that are coming in late have never been to ST J so I badly want it all to go right for them. Hopefully the Suttons will help us out!
Hey sister, another thought is to have the rental agent pick up the keys. The folks could come back to town and fill out the paper work in the morning. I think we'll have half of Conrad's cars that week.
Cheers, RickG
I understand the Whoo Hooo- when we went last year after a 5 year hiatus, I actually broke down and cried at the desk at Suttons, I was so happy to be there. The poor lady must have thought I was nuts but I kept blubbering "i'm so happy to be back....". This year's trip is a bit of an unplanned bonus so we aren't counting down the days everyday but boy, we are still so happy to be going back!! Suttons should be fine. We aren't going to bother to rent until the day after we get there as we're staying at Maho Bay again and we'll have the shuttle pick us up so its just a matter of taking the shuttle back to town the next morning at our leisure and picking up the car. Rick, please take good care of "our" little Suzuki, thanks!
Do you think the rental agency will get the keys for them? That would be great and wouldn't keep any of us from food/booze shopping.
Karrieb, our brother Chris will be driving the Suzuki. I had that on our last trip and it was fine for 2. I would even use it for 2 adults and 2 kids. The Montero gives me room for the brood and the GrandParents along with luggage.
You can ask the Caribbean Villas folks to pick up the keys... Another option is for one of us to sign for the cars and drop the keys off with the Caribbean Villas folks. The best solution is to have the Suttons stick around the extra few minutes. If our last group makes the 5PM Red Hook ferry they'll be okay anyways. Just have the late crew call us from the airport and let us know what time they got in. No worries, soon come...
Cheers, RickG
I have another car rental question besides the hours of operation. How far in advance do you recommend reserving a car? Last May/June we waited until we got there and then had to wait until 1:30 the next day after arrival to get a car. I was crying because I wanted to get to the beaches. My husband wants to use St. John Car rental this time because he saw that it was close to the ferry. We will arrive at around 6 pm on a Saturday in June 2007. Are they open on Sunday? Does anyone know their hours?
Yup, the Suzukis are great, its what we always rent there, tons of fun and zip enough!
We are renting from St. John Car Rentals in November. Their website states that they are open 7 days a week until 5 pm. http://www.stjohncarrental.com/ for details. Enjoy!
New England, if you are getting in early, you get the keys. A no brainer. Sutton is just about the same distance as St.John Care Rental. Actually they are all really close to the dock.

I cant wait to get my Island car.
