I'll be spending a week on St. John w/ my family of 6 (+ 2 in-laws). I thought we'd rent 2 jeeps, but found out that this would run about $420 for each jeep. Can one rent regular cars? Are the buses okay for getting to the beach? I might just rent a jeep for a few days, but don't know how immobilized we'd be w/o a car. We'll be staying at the Westin (which has shuttles to "town," iIguess). Thanks for any info. -- Andrea

Check with Paris /Hertz in Cruz Bay. They may have other cars to rent. Say hello to Patsy and Troy, who provide great customer service with a smile.

Hello Andrea,

You might rent a van to fit everyone... that would be around $90 a day or thereabouts. You will want a car if you plan to beach hop, eat out, see the island. Buses are there yes, not the optimum choice but they exist and run a regular route. If you plan to stay at the Westin one day, charter another day, maybe go to St. Thomas the next day... well thats three days you wouldn't really need a car... so you might plan those activities back to back and then rent a car for the other days.

Also, if you can get shuttled to Cruz Bay then another day you could (if people in your group like hiking) shuttle into town, walk to the Visitors Center for the National Park and hike to Honeymoon and along to Caneel Bay and take a taxi back or hike back if you aren't tired. Would not need a car for that either. To drive around the island, go out to Salt Pond Bay, Annaberg, Trunk Bay ect. you will want a car - taxis will add up quickly if you want to sightsee often.
