A word of advice to you is to not rent from Conrad Sutton. We had a horrible experience where they charged us to repair some paint. We were taken advantage of and forced to pay for some paint that had come off the bumper. We noticed some paint that had bubbled on the bumper but didn't mark it down on the inspection report. In hindsight it looks like a poor repainting job failed to work well, and the paint came off the bumper. Maybe it wasn't primed. But we had to pay hundreds of dollars to pay for repainting. It seems they have a racket going on where they eke out a few more dollars from the consumer by repainting the bumper.
If you do decide to rent from this shady establishment, please make sure you check over the car completely, and if you find any nick/ding or place where it looks like the finish has been painted over - make sure to document it. To protect yourself just rent from somewhere else.
Many people on this board have reported good experiences with Conrad Sutton, only mentioning a little grouchiness among members of the office staff. It is, however, good advice to examine the car carefully when you pick it up
I must say we have not had any issues with Conrad and certainly do not consider them to be shady.. Having said that that we always look over every rental and mark down any noticeable markings on both the outside and inside. We do that with any rental company, on island or stateside. Certain national companies are known for trying to tag 'vehicle abuse' onto contracts so it is always better to be thorough whenever renting a car. I even check the trunk now since needing a spare and finding it missing, then the national company tried to charged me for the missing part! Fortunately I had the copy of their road side assistance receipt.
What I have noticed with Conrad is they do change attitude when you start the conversation with "Good morning, how are you doing today?". I attribute this to basic island civility and find it helps all over the islands. If you don't have the time, neither do they.
I don't have any familiarity with Conrad Sutton other than I have heard good things in the past about them. I did have what I thought was a unique experience with Budget though. When we rented from them last they handed me the keys without an inspection. I asked them if we were going to do an inspection and the person at the counter said the vehicle was older so there was no need. It may not have been the smartest thing to do, but we were anxious to start our trip so I took the keys and off we went. The car was not in terrible shape. When we turned it in there was no post rental inspection either.
when ever we rent a car, we always take pictures or even video of the car before leaving the lot, this way we have proof of what is wrong before we drive out!!
We've rented from Conrad Sutton many times over the years and never had a bad experience. It was always convenient to leave the car there day or night and it would always be cleaned and washed when we got back. On St John it's always best to rent the oldest car in the fleet that already has bumps, bruises and scratches so they really don't care whether you add more or not. Just make sure the tires have plenty of tread left.
