I was told by friends who were on St John a couple years ago that I would be able to go topless on the more secluded beaches, like Francis Bay and Salt Pond Bay, during an upcoming vacation. I was wondering if this is still the case or if things have changed.
I am also wondering where Jumbie Beach is. I see it listed on the VINow website, but I have not seen it on any of the maps.
Thanks for any information.

Jumbie Bay is between Hawksnest Bay and Trunk Bay (closer to Trunk). Not sure about topless being legal, but have heard a few stories from the locals when I was there. 🙂

Hello Sarah,

Topless and clothing optional/nude bathing is illegal in the USVI.

What your friends indicated to you is accurate - some people choose to break the law and take their chances and go to more secluded beaches. Francis Bay and Salt Pond bay although a bit harder to get to are still pretty frequented beaches and I have never seen nude or top less people at either. The only beach I have seen such behavior on St. John is Soloman Bay HOWEVER Park Rangers are inforcing the law now and they give out tickets for indecent exposure!

Thanks for the information. My friends had a fealing that it was not legal, but felt that it probably went unenforced at the quieter beaches at the east end of the island. I figure that most people would not go out of their way to contact a ranger if I take off my top, but if the rangers are actually going around and giving tickets I doubt I will.

Is Jumbie Bay easy to find, or do you have to know where it is in order to find it?

I remember seeing a sign for Jumbie Bay along the North Shore Road (20). If, from Cruz Bay you make it to Trunk Bay without seeing it, then you just went a little too far. Looking on my National Park STJ map, Jumbie is located (just east) in the same bay as Trunk.

Sarah,

The ticket comment was concerning Soloman Bay... as for the other beaches being protrolled I dont know.

Jumbie Bay is easy to find... there is a sign along the road, limited parking on the road side, wooden steps and a path to the beach.

Have a great time.

Yes real easy to find Nice sign right along the roadside, not much place for parking but get there early and you'll have no problem. Steps down and then an easy path. One of my favorites!!!!
