We are taking a cruise which stops in St Thomas. Last time we did this we rented a jeep in St John and toured the island. Seems now whomever I contact they want us to call that morning for the vehicle. I'm afraid I'll get stuck with something I don't want to drive OR not get any vehicle at all. Does anyone know if you can reserve a jeep for one day anywhere? Do they all require you to call instead of reserve? Thanks!

Or if you can give me advice on what other then renting a jeep we can do please let me know. I want to do something exciting but also be able to see the island too.

Helen

Why not try a helicopter tour? That should be exciting enough, you'll see the islands, and then have time for limin' on da beech, mon!

Hey Marty,
Heck I never thought about a helicopter tour. That would be so awesome!

I like to use the folks at Conrad Sutton's. Check out http://conradcars.com/. I've never had a problem making reservations there. They are very close to the ferry dock.

Hello Helen,

As far as I understand the rental folks on St. John won't take reservations for one day jeep rentals. Reasoning, it makes more cents to rent for a few days and not to tie up rentals with reservations for one day. The only exception that I have heard of I believe was Hertz which works with one of the local rental companies to fill the reservations - so you might try Hertz's website and see if that works. Otherwise the process is head over to St. John on the passenger ferry and then walk to the various car rental lots and see what they have - they are pretty centrally located in Cruz Bay in walking distance from the ferry. Or you could rent a jeep or car on St. Thomas and take it over on the car barge. Budget and Avis have offices close to the Havensight dock area (where most ships dock) and they take reservations for one day rentals.

If you go over to St. John and happen not to get a jeep rental. You could try renting a dinghy in Cruz Bay and beach hop that way. And not so exciting but there are always taxi tours.
