Our family is planning a trip to the Carribean in July '04. We have never been to the islands before. We have two active boys, 10 & 16, that will not be content to lie on the beach... golf is a must. The two properties I have been looking at are the Buccaneer in St. Croix and the new Marriot at Frigate Bay in St. Kitts. Both seem to offer the facilities we want. Can anyone give me any insight into the either hotel? I'm worried that the
Buccaneer is dated and overpriced. We have six nights available.
I have not been to St. Kitts but I have been to St. Croix. The Buccaneer is a great property and is really not dated. It is a higher priced hotel than most others on the island. The property is very well kept and has a great beach besides the golf course.
Carambola resort is another choice on St. Croix that has a beautiful golf course and a fine beach. Lots of snorkeling/diving opportunities on this end of the island as well for the boys to try. This property is not the cheapest either but worth looking into. They have a great Pirate's night buffet on Friday nights and a super Sunday brunch along with other entertainment on other nights.
I have been to both islands and while St. Croix has good options I have been back to St Kitts. a few times. The new Marriot is beautiful however we usually stay at Timothy Beach juxst up the street on the Carribean side. They do not have the vast pools and those type of things, but they have snorkeling right out front in relatively calm waters. The golf course, is visible from either the Marriot or Timothy Beach. I am not sure if all 18 holes are open as of yet.
St. Kitts has good day trips to Brimstone and Turtle Beach. I also think St. Kitts has a little better scenery since it and the neighboring (reach this by ferry) Nevis are volcanic islands. A day trip with guide to the top of the volcano's is worthwhile and should be a good test of the boys stamina.
Nevis has the Four Seasons golf course which Robert Trent Jones developed and is really beautiful along with being a good test of golf skills.
So much to do so little time.

John
never been to St. Kitts. The Buccaneer is a very nice property. It has a nice golf course and the course at Carambola is also Robert Trent Jones course. He must have had a thing for the Carribean!!
If golf is major interest St. Croix might be the best choice. Check out http://www.finetravel.com/GOLF/golftheVI.htm . Depending on where you are traveling from it might also take less time to get to and from St. Croix, which could maximize your six days.
The Buccaneer is an "old" property in the very best sense of that word.
The Buccaneer is a very nice resort. The golf course is the prettiest that I have ever seen anywhere. The breakfast is fabulous. It also has a nice beach, a good pool and very good tennis courts. It is expensive, but a good value. Drinks in the lounge are a must. The dinner was good, but there are better restaurants in town and on the east end. If you go to St. Croix be sure to visit Buck Island for snorkling.
I've been to St. Kitts and Nevis a couple of times. Love those islands. Golfing is great on St. Kitts. The Marriott is awesome. Quite a few resorts on the island also offer golf and the courses are very challenging.
Take a trip to Nevis - well worth it. St. Kitts is the wealthiest of the Caribbean islands and many stars live there or own houses I should say. Very clean and beautiful island. Very friendly people too. No problems of high crime - feel very safe when I've gone there.
St. Thomas is wonderful too but it's been many years since I've been there - looking for to returning in August - first time in 15 years!! Hope it's just a beautiful as STT, STJ & STX were when I came there for a high school graduation trip.
If you are choosing solely on golf - then I'd say St. Kitts. Both islands have there unique qualities - St. Kitts/Nevis are a little more Caribbean to me if you are looking for culture.
You can't go wrong with either choice - to golf all day on a Caribbean island is heaven anyway you look at it. 🙂
