Is there a good way to get to other islands from St. Croix. Maybe Virgin gorda for a day trip?

I do not think you can feasibly go from St. Croix to Virgin Gorda for a day trip, unless you did a charter. To get there, you would have to fly to St. Thomas, and either take a boat from there to Virgin Gorda or take a boat from St. Thomas to Tortola and another boat from Tortola to Virgin Gorda.

It would indeed be difficult (almost impossible) to do a day trip from STX to the BVI but you might consider taking the Island Lynx ferry between STX and STT (first one leaves Gallows Bay at 7AM, arr approx 8:30AM) and then taking the (Charlotte Amalie, not Red Hook) ferry to STJ for the day.

If you check out the ferry schedules at the top of this page it's quite manageable and could be a lot of fun, while giving you the opportunity to see more of the US Virgin Islands.

One other option if you have several people wanting to go is to charter a private aircraft to take you from STX to Virgin Gorda or Tortola or St. Bart's or St. Martin or Nevis, etc. If you have 3-5 people going and split the cost among you, it is often fairly reasonable per person and you get to travel on your schedule not an airline's or ferry's. You also save a lot of time in your precious vacation as you can get to your destination in one hop and not spend all day going each direction on multiple aircraft and ferries. Sometimes an overnight might even be an option if the pilot is willing to stay (or if you want to pay for him to make two trips). My husband is a pilot and we often island hop this way and sometimes take friends along. When we provide the plane and the friends take care of hotels and meals, everybody wins!

From STX, it takes about 20 minutes to get to Tortola, a few minutes more to Virgin Gorda, about an hour to St. Martin or St. Bart's. Compare that to a commercial flight to St. Thomas and then driving to the ferry and waiting for the next one, etc.

You can email me directly at [email protected] if you would like info on pilots on STX who fly day trippers and over-nighters to these other islands.
