Which is right for us?

2 Parents, 2 older teens, 17 and 18.
Used to camping, but not bringing camping gear for this trip.
Will rent a car.
Want: A place to stay that offers autonomy - being able to walk to the beach or go back to the home base alone. A location close to a good beach for swimming and snorkling.

Where should we go? St. Croix or St. John? Any suggestions for places to stay? Planning on a quick get-a-way this summmer, probably between July 23- Aug 1, for 5 days.

Hello,
Wow, you will have a lot of options. I really loved Cinnamon Bay on St. John. There is a fully equipped camp ground right off the beach. Also there are cabins. There is more info at www.cinnamonbay.com If you are wanting more hotel type stay, I am sure others can give you more info. St. John is a place to get away, not really see people. It is secluded. If you want to be on a larger island with more people than St. Croix might be want you want. So many hotels have their own beach and you can snorkel almost everywhere. So you can't go wrong either way.
Just my two cents.

I looked at Maho Bay Camps. Tell me about all of those pathways. What's is like as far as "the attack of the killer bugs" on the way to your cabin? Where do you park your car? How far away is it to the beach?

Pam,

Are you specifically interested in camping? If so, then STJ is by far the more logical choice, although St. Croix does have Mt. Victory Camp - http://www.mtvictory camp.com/ . It is only a short drive to beaches, but it would be a longer walk.

If you are open to hotels, etc. there are several of us that could chime in with options for St. Croix. Do you have a price range?
