Hello Y'all,

I was wondering just exactly how far it was from Fredricksted to Christiansted. Basically, how far from one end to the other and across. I am trying to figure out exactly what would be too far to get to the hospital.....and as I am map impaired, and directionally semi-impaired, I'm relaying on y'all to help me. Are the roads well marked? Can I get lost in the vegetation? Is the Rain forest far from Christiansted? Is around the hospital safe at night? Is there anything I need to know about the locals, customs, etc., to make this a wonderful adventure? What Internet service is available in St. Croix? Does AT&T cellphone work there? Anything else that you can think of that might help, I truly appreciate. Thanks y'all. Gypsy

Hi Gypsy,

Actually St. Croix is pretty easy to get around. The roads are clearly marked, but be aware the roads do have a lot of turns, so you have to watch for those. Depending on the route you take, from Frederickstead to Christainstead could take 1/2 to 1 hour. If you take the highway, 1/2 hour, if you take the local roads, 1 hour. I have only been to St. Croix one time and we did not get a chance to see the rain forest, so I can't help you with that. I do recall passing the hospital, not sure if it is safe at night. In Christainstead everything (except the boardwalk) closes up at 5PM. They say you should stay near boardwalk after that time. It is pretty deserted looking at night.
Customs are pretty much like the other Virgin's: be friendly, no bathing suits in town and everyone moves very slowly (I am from NY and it is a big adjustment!!!) Compared to the other USVI's, St. Croix is pretty deserted. Most days, we were the only people on the beach.

Have a great trip.

Hi, Gypsy! We made our 1st trip to STX last June and are going back this June. We stayed in F'sted. We took several trips across the island. The highway will get you to C'sted in 25-30 minutes. Don't be afraid to branch out and try other routes if your health allows because there is so much to see. The rainforest is west of C'sted. It is NOT clearly marked. You can easily lose your sense of direction. Take a compass if you have one, and avoid the Beast unless you have 4 wheel drive. We got a map from vitraders.com that helped alot. We had internet at our hotel and we also had cell phone connection through Cingular, now AT&T. Their is a hospital in C'sted that I remember on the mid-north side. I'm not sure about F'sted on the west side. The people from STX are friendly and relaxed. I'm sure that you will have a wonderful time.

Hey Y'all,

Thanks so much for all the info. I am so excited to finally be coming to St. Croix. My mother spend all her summers when she was a child there, my grandfather had a house. But this is the first time me, my girls will be going...oh and of course...we can't forget "the mom." She is more excited that all of us, she can't wait to see if she can remember where the house was/is. I love this forum.....thanks so much.

Wow, 4th generation coming to STX. STX is @ 7 miles wide and @ 28 miles long , so your home town is probably bigger. Most of the roads have route numbers so with a map it's pretty easy. If you haven't driven here yet think about driving on the left, it's different and takes a day or two to climb the learing curve. Have a wonderful stay.
