We are visiting for the first time, and want to see other islands Most of the postings on this board speak of day trips and ferries out of St Thomas or St Johns. What island trips or beaches are worthwhile out of St Croix?
Hello Carrie,
St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island are very close to each other. And the British Virgin Islands is very close to St. Thomas and St. John. So island hopping between these islands is fairly easy and rather inexpensive ($6-$50 depending on island, round trip). St. Croix is 40 miles away from St. Thomas and while its an easy island hop by seaplane and a short ride it will cost between $80-110 or thereabouts. There is a ferry that makes the trip as well from Dec-May. So you can visit St. Thomas from St. Croix. Visiting St. John or Water Island or the BVI would require a lot of commuting (ferry to St. Thomas, a possiable taxi ride and then another ferry).
From St. Croix you can do a day sail to Buck Island, an underwater marine reserve/island not far from St. Croix, for a day of sailing and snorkeling or diving. There are quite a few nice beach days to be had on St. Croix; Cane Bay, Carombola, Chenay Bay, Divi, Buccaneer Beach...

Carrie,
You should also know that, while it is fairly removed in terms of proximity from the other Virgin Islands, St. Croix is by far the largest of the group. The topography is quite varied, and there are so many different things to do and places to go that it wil almost feel like you have seen several different islands.
