Hello!

We are planning on eloping to St. Croix in May. We had a few budgeting questions we hoped you would be able to help us with.

Can anyone provide us with an idea of the cost per day for eating out? Breakfast is provided at the hotel, but we are at a loss for what an average lunch and dinner will cost us everyday.

Also, is there anywhere on the island to download photos from a digital camera and burn them onto a CD? Or somewhere to have film developed. Is the cost very high for this service on the island?

Finally, can anyone give us an idea of how much the local attractions cost. We wanted to go scuba diving and sailing at least once, can anyone reccomend a good economical service.

Thanks so much for all your help!!!!

Lisa

Hello Lisa

First, congratulations on your upcomming marriage, and you picked a great place to do it.

I can't help with the photo questions, but I'm sure there will be more responses.

Food budgets can be very managable. If you are not adventurous, you can go with the standby Subway, Wendy's and KFC on St Croix. If you do want to try island food, there are many roadside places for anything from BBQ to conk salads. The restrants also go from very reasonable, to very expensive. We liked Cheesburgers in Paradise, and Changes in Latitude for good food and reasonable prices. There are many more. When you get to St Croix, pick up a "This week in St Croix" booklet, and it has many, many places listed, along with a description, location, and price range. All of them are great.

Same with the attractions. Point Udall, the eastern most point of the USA, is free, just a car ride up, but the views are great. Crusian Rum Factory tour, when we were there was $3.00 per person, and a great value, very interesting, and free drink at the end of the tour. We took a half day trip to Buck Island for snorkeling, and it was around $45 (if I remember right) Great Fun, and very much worth the money. You could also cut costs by renting equipment, and snorkeling off the beach. My point is, you can spend quite a bit, or you can still have a wonderful time, on a budget. Have a great time.

Lisa,
You don't indicate where you will be staying. But, there are several deli's and such and many of the hotels have ref. and microwaves. We went to the deli, which I can't remember the name but it is on the east side of the island and bought drinks, sandwich stuff and just snacks because we knew we would not be spending money on eating out all the time.
As mentioned by SaS, Buck Island and the Rum Factory are good deals and worth the price. Another good one is Sweeney's tour. It is an open air van that stops at several sites around the island. It basically goes from one end of the island to the other. I don't normally like that sort of tour thing, but it gave us a great insight to the island and where we might want to drive to while visiting.

You'll have a great time.

I don't think there is a better deli anywhere then the one you refer to on the east side of the Croix. That deli is called Just-in -Case and is located next to the Reef golf course. All of Lori's foods are fresh and good.

Good Morning All,

One Question??

Are Exxon and Mobil gas credit cards accepted on St. Croix?

Thanks
Ernie

One thing that you should probably plan to do is rent a car. Public transportation on St. Croix is not good, taxis get expensive after a while and a rental car will allow you the freedom to travel around the island. Just remember to drive on the left!

Most gas stations on STX are independents. They don't take any type of credit cards.

Hours of operation and availability of gas are unpredictable. Plan accordingly and don't let your gas gauge get below a half a tank.

Thank you all for your tips and advice! Especially about the gas stations. Wow, that is very different from the states.

We are staying at the Buccaneer, and plan on renting a car through Judy of St. Croix. We will definately check out the Just In Case Deli. Sounds like just what we are looking for. It is so hard to budget, having never been to the island. But the Buccaneer includes breakfast, and if we can do delis for lunch, then only have to spend $$$ for dinner. That will definately help.

I am so glad to hear that the sightseeing and attacrations are so reasonable. That gives us something to look forward to. I mean other than the tropical paradise and all! 🙂

Thank you all again, I really do appreciate all your tips. They are so helpful!

Jim, don't know about you, but every trip I've made to STX, the gas stations always took AMX, Visa, and MC. No problem with Major Credit Cards.

WE WERE THERE IN DECEMBER. HAD A GREAT LUNCH AT THE BOMBAY CLUB IN DOWN TOWN CHRISTANSTED. THE COST WAS ABOUT THE SAME AS THE STATES.
FOR SCUBA DIVING TRY ANCHOR DIVE CENTER AT SALT RIVER. VERY NICE PEOPLE.
WE STAYED AT THE DIVI RESORT, VERY NICE BUT TOO FAR FROM TOWN AND ANYTHING EXCEPT THE CASINO. NEXT JULY WHEN WE GO BACK, WE WILL STAY DOWNTOWN CHRISTANSTED AT EITHER CARAVELL OR KING CHRISTAN.

You will love the Buccaneer. My family and I have stayed there 8 times and will be going in July for our 9th visit. I have taken other families and everyone loves the place. The breakfast buffet is great and is really a good value. Also be aware that if you don't like what is offered, they will prepare omlettes or what ever else you might want. I have found that prices on St Croix are comparable to where I live in PA. The rooms at the Buccaneer have small refrigerators that you can use for drinks and some snacks. You really should rent a car. I suggest Olympic Car rental, having used them on all my visits. They have better prices than anyone else I have checked and the vehicles are no better or worse than anyone else. Ther are tons of options for eating out. If you have any preference for a certain type of food I will try to help if you respond to this posting. St Croix is by far our favorite island. We have been to St Thomas,St John,St Martin,Puerto Rico,Cozumel,South America,Anguilla,Cancun several times,Ixtapa,Playa Del Carmen all for vacations, not cruise ship visits. You can not beat St. Croix. It does not have the absolute best beaches or fanciest resorts but it's wonderful. Just p/u any of the brochures etc at the airport and check them out. Have a great time and let me know if I can help with anything else. P.S. There is an international Triathalon event every year on the first weekend in May. If you are going then it will be an added bonus. Lot's of street paties and bands ,etc.

Lisa,

Just wanted to second that suggestion about going to Just in Case Deli. We stayed at Coakley Bay condos and dropped by the deli one day when we were out driving. The lady who cooks had just brought fresh huge muffins and cinnamon rolls (covered in icing) that looked wonderful. We bought some and reheated them in the microwave the next morning. WOW! We were completely hooked! It's just down the road from the Bucanneer and Coakley and we would drive up to get breakfast several mornings. Also her chicken salad was fabulous! We brought that back in a container and made sandwiches for 2 days--- fighting over the last bit!

We also used Judi of Croix (for 2 years now) and have been impressed with their service.

Have a wonderful trip!
