My wife and I are planning on going to St. Croix this summer for the first time. I understand that there are two main areas, Christianstead and Fre??? (forgot the spelling). Which area is the best to stay at? We are looking for an area that is walking distance to eating and the beach. Are there anything we should be concern about (such as crime). We have been to St Thomas and St John.

Thanks,
Michael

Hello Michael,

Frederiksted

I would say stay close to Christiansted. You might even consider the Protestant Cay property. St. Croix is a bit spread out - so you might want to rent a car and stay a little outside of Christiansted and then drive to see things, as will be required to see Whim, different beaches, rain forest, east side of island... beautiful places. If you stay in Christiansted you can walk to restaurants and take the little ferry to Protestant Cay to enjoy the beach there. Otherwise youll need to drive to other beaches like Cane Bay and others. Look in the St. Croix guide on this site for beaches and attractions you might enjoy.

Michael,
I have lived on STT for eight months and just went to St Croix for the first time today. (shame on me). I LOVED the Christiansted area. Lots of unique stores, shopping, and restaurants. The hubby and I are already planning a weekend getaway. I can't comment on F'ed, b/c I didn't get over there. Wherever you choose Ithough 'm sure you'll love it.

St Croix is big enough that to really enjoy it you must have a rental car. Christiansted is the best place to shop and dine. Frederikstad has great potential, but so far has not had the government support necessary to develop properly. The most beautiful beaches and snorkeling are on the west end near F..sted, but it is not a tourist friendly area. The area from Chris...ted to the east is much more tourist friendly with exceptional restaurants (among the best in the Caribbean) and good shopping. But overall this is a wonderful island that suffers from a corrupt government (as does stj & stt).
When we finally come alive and demand honesty and service from our government we and our visitors will all benefit.

We are time share owners of the Divi Resort in Bonaire, the Divi Carina Bay is just
lovely on St. Croix, we stayed there a couple years ago and it was very nice. Rent
a car and you are close to town. They also have a fun little casino for nighttime
entertainment. The beach is nice there.
