We are headed to Water Island next week for the first time. Just curious from anyone who's been or lives there. Is there a public access part to Sprat Bay or do we have to be staying in one of the homes located there to access it? Just wandering in case we want to check it out one day over honeymoon beach. Can't wait to get back to the islands.
I'm going to guess that you are speaking about access to the Sprat Bay Beach area. The one third of Water Island that is Sprat Bay is a closed/gated community in which all roads and property are privately owned. Thus, the only public access to the Sprat Bay beach is from open water, as are all beaches in the U.S. Virgin Islands. If you are renting, or a guest in one of the properties within Sprat Bay you will have access to the beach and marina, otherwise no. It seems that there is always someone that wants to push the point, but it is what it is, and has been since 1952, so unless invited avoid the private area. Besides, Honeymoon beach is far superior in all respects. Where are you staying?

Avoid the reclusive and ridiculous attitude of the Sprat Bay 'owners' -- plenty of other wonderful beaches available with Welcoming People.
Ok no big deal. We'll stick to honeymoon beach. Just wanting to see the different sides of Water Island. Thanks for the info. We are staying at Villa Acqua Bella. What appeals to us about Water Island is the peace and quiet and authenticity of the place. We wanted to not feel so touristy this time and try to get the real island lifestyle. So other than heading over to the BVI's with cpt john on palm tree charters for a day we don't plan on much but taking in the relaxation of wi.

EZ: I'm not a Sprat Bay resident, but I will defend their right to their Private property. For the most part they are not reclusive, and certainly no more ridiculous in their attitude then most of us on Water Island. Since 1952 the area has been established with minimum development potential, and after the island transfer to the VI in 1996 the Sprat Bay Association was able to acquire the entire area so that it continues to be a closed community with private roads and large parcels set aside as permanent non-development. Reclusive? not so much, just not trying to build, build , build like some other islands. And, you are correct about the other beaches on Water Island.
