I work at one of the hotels here on STX. We have each of our guests complete a comment card about both the hotel and STX. There have been a number of people who were disappointed in STX. Usually it's because they came here with unrealistic expectations. Here are a few tips to make your visit to our island more enjoyable.

1. Meals are social events here. They are not to be rushed. Supper will typically take up to two hours. It's not bad service. It's the way it's done.

2. When you begin a conversation with a Crusian always start off with "Good morning, good afternoon or good night" whichever is appropriate for the time of day. If you do not, you have been rude. Crusians do not tolerate rude people.

3. As you walk down the street, people will make eye contact and speak to you. Don't be frightened. They are being polite.

4. Crusians don't like pushy people. The louder you are and the pushier you are, the worse your service will be. Remember, you're in the islands. Relax and go with the flow.

5. We don't do things like you do in (fill in your favorite city or state here). That's probably why you came here in the first place. You wanted something different than you get at home.

6. Our houses typically don't look as good as the ones back home. That's because we don't need as much house as you do in the states. We do a lot of our living outdoors. We also don't have to worry about heating a house.

7. We have bugs here. Some bite. They mostly bite the tourists because they are looking for new meat. :>) Use insect repellent. We call it "Carribean Cologne".

8. We are into nature here. We are very protective of our plants and animals, both on land and in the sea. You're going to see critters here you won't see back home. Please respect them.

9. We tend to be "early to bed, early to rise" here. Most of the beach bars close by 9:30. There are a few late night places, but not very many.

10. Water is a precious comodity here. Please conserve it.

Please come to our island and enjoy yourself. But, come with realistic expectations. If you're looking to party, this may not be the island for you. If you are looking to come, relax and enjoy nature, there's no better place on the planet. If you're coming to meet interesting people who may think and look a little differently, this is the place. See you soon.

Crime, topless beaches, and good neighborhoods….
I’m against the first and support the second. Most of the neighborhoods are good outside the projects.
A couple of other things.
Please keep to the left when on the sidewalk.
Don’t touch any animal or plant unless you know what it is. We have a few that sting, bite, pinch, exude an allergen, etc.
Stop asking me if there is a shoreline road that connects Carambola/Davis Beach with the lighthouse. Take a look at the topography!
Slow down and have a fun vacation.
